Sri Dhakshinamoorthi Ashtoththarashathanama Sthothram – Lyrics and meanings

|| Dhyanam ||

I shall prostrate before supreme Lord Dhakshinamoorthi who is seated under the Vatavriksha/peepal tree, he is Yogi whose lotus feet are highly propitious, he has the luster of autumn moon, he is most venerable and he is adorned in magnificent crown on matted hair locks, he is adorned in sacred river Ganga on matted hair locks/Gangadhara, he has an eye on forehead/Lalataksha, he is attired in skin of leopard,  he is decorated with the venomous serpents as ornaments all over his body, he is Parambhramam, he has the luster of camphor, he carries Akshamala/prayer beads/Rudraksha, Gnanamudhra/hands are in Gnanmudhra posture, he carries Veena/musical instrument and Pusthaka/sacred scriptures on his hands,  he is surrounded by illustrious elderly sages and Shukadeva, he is highly confidential even the Veda and Vedantha could not perceive,  he is youthful like Manmatha, I shall take refuge on the lotus feet of Lord Dhakshinamoorthi.



I shall meditate upon supreme Lord Dhakshinamoorthi who is  the essence of supreme wisdom and knowledge, he is Mahayogi/supreme ascetic , he is pure and wise, he is wielded in vicious weapon Pinaka, he is  adorned in gem decorated ornaments all over his body, he is adorned in magnificent crown on his matted hair locks, he is adorned in sacred Ganga, he resides on the highest mountain peaks, he is Mahajjani/supremely wise, he undertakes deep meditation, he is unfathomable and has innumerable forms, he symbolizes Yoga, he guides worshiper to safely cross the ocean of Samsara, he is too compassionate to his worshiper, he is absolute Bhramam, he is omnipresent, he is personified as Vishnu, he is primordial, he has divine bull as cestial vehicle, he is attired in  skin of animal, he is attired in majestic clothes too, he is the provider of Moksha/liberation from repeated births, he symbolizes Moksha, he is Jagathipathi, he is adorned in sacred scriptures, he is unblemished, he is the provider of supreme wisdom and knowledge, he is the commander of Ganas, he eradicates swollen pride, and lack of concentration/forgetfulness in worshiper, he is decorated in crescent moon on matted hair locks, he makes loud noises, he is fond of Samaveda, he is imperishable and virtuous, he is accompanied by all the deities, he is Sriman/symbolizes wealth, he carries colossal fire on his hand, he carries antelope in one hand, he is Shankara who symbolizes auspiciousness, he is the Lord of Yajja/fire sacrifices, he destroyed the fire sacrifice of Dhakshaprajapathi/krathudhvamsi, he graciously accepts oblation from fire sacrifices, he is the destroyer of Yama, he showers abundance of boons to worshiper, he is worshiped by passionate devotees, he carries flag that has the symbol of celestial bull, he is smeared in sacred ashes all over his body, he is decorated in Akshamala/Rudraksha all over his body, he represents trinities, he is Parambhrama, he is decorated in King of serpents as ornament, he is serene, he is wise, he has endless glories, he is embodied as Ardhanareeshvara, he is Suroththama/eminent among the deities who is worshiped by illustrious Sages and Rishis, he is supreme Lord who imparts the knowledge and wisdom, he has Ravi/surya, Chandhra/moon, and Agni/fire as three eyes, he is Jagathguru/universal preceptor, he is Mahadeva, he is eternal bliss who immerses in deep meditation, he is Jatadhari who have attractive matted hair locks, he is Mahayogi who is proficient in Yogic practices, he is the essence of wisdom and knowledge, he is king of ascetics who symbolizes sky , water and Earth, he is the essence of philosophies, he is Mahayogi, he is the provider of  skills in speech, he is embodied as Vyoma/sky, ether, air, water, heaven, etc.. he fulfils all the desires of his worshiper, he is Paramoorthi, he is supreme bliss/Chithswaroopi/pure intellect, he has supreme radiance/Thejomoorthi, he is Shiva, he is the essence of Veda and Vedanga philosophies, he symbolizes 64  art forms, he eradicates the fear of worldly existence in worshiper, he is  safest haven to people who are surrendered at his lotus feet, he has bluish throat, he has an eye on forehead, he is attired in the skin of elephant, he is devoid of Raga/lust, passion, desire, jealousy, etc. he fulfils all the desires of the worshiper, he is Thapasvi who undertakes severe penances,  he is beloved of Lord Vishnu/Vishnuvallabha, he established the four Ashramadharma known as Bhramachari, Grihastha, Sanyasa and Vanaprastha, he is restrained, he  is most excellent, he is too compassionate to his worshiper, he is absolute truth, he is personified as Yogapattabhirama/Dhakshinamoorthi, he carries Veena, he undertakes deep meditation, he represents supreme intellect, he is decked in sacred Ganga on his matted hair locks, his hands are in sacred Mudhra posture, he carries sacred scriptures, he destroys evilness caused by Vethala, Pishacha, and Rakshasa, he is Sureshvara/Lord of Lords who eradicates all kinds of severe illnesses of the worshiper.
