Sri Bilvashtakam – Lyrics and meanings

|| Jai Sriman Narayana ||

I shall meditate upon supreme Lord Shiva  and I shall  reverentially offer one bale leaf to Lord Shiva, it has three petals, it represents Thrigunas known as Sathva, Rajas and Thamasic,  it represents three eyes of Lord Shiva, it symbolizes living beings collectively in the three worlds, it eradicates the accumulated sins of three births of the worshiper by offering single bale leaf to Lord Shiva.  The bale leaf used for the worship of Lord Shiva should have three branches, leaf should be unbroken, clean and fresh,  I shall  reverentially offer single bale leaf to Lord Shiva.  Lord Nandikeshvara should be worshiped with unbroken bale leaves, it will eradicate all the impurities of the sins and the worshiper will remain sinless, I shall reverentially offer single bale leaf to Lord Shiva.  Worship of Lord Shiva with a single bale leaf would provide the merit of offering Salagramashila to a Vipra/Bhramin as charity and it also provides highly meritorious reward of performance of Somayajja, I shall reverentially offer single bale leaf to Lord Shiva.  Worship of Lord Shiva with a single bale leaf provides the meritorious rewards of offering of crores and thousands of elephants as charity, performance of hundreds of Vajapeya Yajja, performance of marriage to crores of brides to suitable bridegroom; I shall reverentially offer single bale leaf to Lord Shiva.  Worship of Lord Shiva with a single bale leaf would provide the merit of offering Bilvavruksha/bale tree as charity, which originates from the bosom of Goddess Sri Mahalakshmi and beloved of Lord Shiva, I shall reverentially offer single bale leaf to Lord Shiva.  And mere witnessing the bale tree and touching the same would eradicate all the sins of the worshiper, it is capable to remove severe sins of the worshiper, I shall reverentially offer single bale leaf to Lord Shiva.  Worship of Lord Shiva with a single bale leaf would bring the meritorious reward of residing in the sacred city of Kashi, worship of Lord Kalabhairava and Madhava, and holy dip in Prayaga, I shall reverentially offer single bale leaf to Lord Shiva.  The sacred bale tree symbolizes trinities, its root represents Lord Bhrama, trunk represents Lord Vishnu, leaves and branches represents Lord Shiva, I shall reverentially offer single bale leaf to Lord Shiva.  Whoever reads or listens to the highly meritorious verses of Bilvashtakam would be freed from all the sins, ultimately attain the abode of Lord Shiva.
