Saubhagya Ashtoththarashathanama Sthothram – Lyrics and meanings

The highly propitious hymns of Saubhagya Ashtoththarashathanama Sthothra was narrated to Jamadhagnya by the illustrious preceptor Dhaththathreya. 

Bhargava speaks “ Bhagavan, I would like to listen the glorious hundred and eight names of Sri Devi/Goddess Sri Lalitha, which is famously known as Saubhagyavidhya Varnnana, that provides all kinds of auspiciousness and fulfills all the desires of the worshiper, from the  nectar like words from your lotus  face.” In this way Bhargava Rama appealed in sweet words to illustrious Dhaththathreya who is too compassionate.

Dhaththathreya speaks “Oh! Bhargava, listen to me carefully to the thousands and eight names of Srivdhyavarnnarathnam/ gem like description of glories of Goddess Sri Lalitha, Oh! Bhargava, there are thousands and hundreds of sacred names of Sridevi mentioned in the Puranas and Agamas, I shall narrate the Saubhagyashtoththara which is the essence of all those sacred hymns that was narrated by Lord Shiva to  Bhavani.  Oh! Bhargava, Sri Saubhagya Ashtothtarashathanama Sthothra was composed by Rishi Shiva, it has Anushtup as Chandhass, and the presiding deity is Sri Lalithambika.  It should be recited with utmost faith and devotion followed by Vinyasa.”


I shall meditate upon supreme Goddess Lalithambika, who is Kameshvari /consort of Lord Kameshvara, she symbolizes amorous sport, she is the provider of desire and all the auspiciousness to worshiper, she is Kamaroopa who is the essence of amorous sport, she is most desirable, she is seated on the lotous flower, she has personified as Kamala/Mahalakshmi, he is beyond human intellect, she is most attractive, she represents all kinds of art forms, she is Kamala who is worshiped by Bharathi, she is most celebrated deity, she is excellent, blameless, and eternal, she has inexplicable form, she has originated from the fire, she has endless glorious myths, she is stunningly gorgeous, she symbolizes auspiciousness, she eradicates ill fame, she is omnipresent, she gets easily pleased with the veneration, she has supreme radiance, she has marvelous form worshiped by warriors and she gets immensely pleased by the veneration, she get easily pleased by the veneration of ardent devotees, she has great splendor, she eradicates miseries and sorrows of her passionate devotees, she has pleasing disposition, he has most excellent/beautiful form worshiped by the celestials, she is Eshvareshvari who showers abundance of boons at the will of Eshvara, she is Lalitha/elegant, and most desirable, she is imperishable, she has great effulgence, she causes the Laya/deluge at the end of Yuga, she causes to dissolve the Universe and its living beings, she has subtle form, she has colossal form too, she has adorned in magnificent earring, she has minuscule form as well as rapid too, she is mounted on Haya/horse, she destroys opponents, she is beloved of Hara, she is eulogized by Hari, she has showered boons to Hayagreevah, she is fond of consumption of nectar, she symbolizes supreme bliss, she has pleasant disposition, she has the luster of red lotus, she is the provider of all kinds of auspiciousness, she holds nectar on hand, her lotus feet are most venerable, she accepts oblations from fire sacrifices, she is worshiped by RamA as well as Rama, she is Empress of the universe, she is most beautiful, she symbolizes sounds, she has personified as Devi Rathi, she is the protector of the Universe and its living beings, she is most graceful, she represents full moon, she is most beautiful young woman, she resides in the supreme abode, she protects the living beings in the Universe, she protects the Ganas as well, she is Amba who eradicates darkness of ignorance, she is fond of lotus flowers, she crushed the pride of Anthaka, she has the luster of lotus flower, she holds lotus flower in her hand, she has provided boons to Ambujatha/lotus born, she is worshiped by Lord of death, she symbolizes deluge at the end of Yuga, she is inseparable consort of Lord Shiva who is the slayer of Andhakasura, she is settled to the left of Lord Shiva as Vamangi, she symbolizes happiness and wealth, she is omniscient, she is all pervading, she is the essence of Universe and its living beings, she is impartial, she keeps equanimity in showering happiness, she has personified as Sathi who is the daughter of Dhakshaprajapathi, she symbolizes virtuous offspring, she is the source of offspring, she represents moon,vital forces, nectar, Pitrus, etc.. she represents Sankhya philosophies, she is primeval.

Dhaththathreya speaks “ Oh! Rama, the above are the glorious hundred and eight names of Goddess Lalitha known as Saubhagya Ashtoththarashathanama Sthothram, which is marvelous and has been highly confidential,  it is the essence of all the sacred hymns, it is not accessible for even the three worlds, it was recited by Sadhashiva on regular basis, which assisted Kandharpa to conquer the three worlds effortlessly, it should be recited during the hours of dawn, noon and dusk, by the Srividhyopaska with the systematic and prescribed method of worship of supreme Goddess Sri Lalitha according to the scriptures, recitation of thousands of times of these glorious verses would provide ten folds of religious fervor and it would destroy the enemies, worship of Goddess Sri Lalitha with the flowers of Karaveera and red colored flowers would provide magnetism/Charisma, worship with the white flowers would destroy the enemies, worship with  Lavanga/florwers of clove would eradicate illnesses, worship of Goddess Lalitha with the fresh alluring flowers of Karaveera, red and white colored flowers, flowers of clove, and followed by serving meals to Suvasini/married woman whose husband is alive, and Bhramin would highly pleases Goddess Sri Lalitha and she fulfills all the desires of the worshiper, also  attain abundance of merit includes nearness to supreme Goddess Sri lalitha who resides in the middle of Sri Chakra known as superior abode of  Sripuram.”
