Neethi Shathakam – Sri Bharthruhari
Virachitham
Chapter – 1 – Moorkha Padhdhathi
The learned becomes too haughty and
arrogant of their knowledge, and the wealthiest becomes over-proud and sinners,
what to talk about others? The ignorant keep themselves in utter desolation and
distress; therefore no intellectual speeches or discourses take place to
enlighten them, the ignorant remains rude always. The ignorant are deserved to
be treated with kindness, likewise the intelligent should be treated with
respect. Alas! The person with little knowledge cannot please even the Lord
Bhrama. It is impossible to make the ignorant into intelligent, it is easy to
make understand things to an intellectual, but the people who have little
knowledge and swollen with pride cannot change even by the Lord Bhrama.
It is possible to pick out the pearl from
the blood-stained sharp-toothed mouth of a whale with great effort, one can
cross the ocean of powerful tide with great effort, and one can adorn the angry
serpent as a flower on the head, Alas! It is impossible to change a person with
little knowledge swollen with pride, these people consider themselves as the
highly talented in society, and therefore it is impracticable to change them.
It is possible to take out the oil after crushing the sands with great effort, it
is possible to find the source of the water even in deserts, and quench the thirst.
The person who conducts travels to several destinations may find the impossible
horn of a rabbit, Alas! It is impossible to change the mind of an ignorant who considers
himself intelligent. The effort to change the attitude of ignorant swollen
with pride with the nectar-like speeches are equivalent to trying to fasten the
untamed elephant with the thread, trying
to break the diamond with the tip of the Gireeshakusuma, or trying to convert
the salty ocean into sweet with the few drops of honey. Oh! Jeeva, do not make an effort to transform
a wicked person to virtuous.
Oh! Jeeva, listen to me carefully, once
you strive to attain the supreme knowledge, it would remove all your ignorance.
I have been proud of the little knowledge and have become
haughty like an untamed elephant, I have considered myself as ‘Sarvajja’/knower
of all, when I have been into the association of the intellectuals, Rishis,
Sages and ascetics, and started to learn from them, then I have understood that
‘I am an ignorant’, eventually, all my haughtiness, pride like fever vanished at
once.
The ignorant take pleasure in wicked
deeds, never bothers about the society or its surroundings, like the jackal take
great pleasure in the foul-smelling rotten meat of the donkey, even though
there is no meat portion left behind, other than a few bones packed in worms,
if it sees the Indra near to it, it won’t feel shy. Alas! The wicked Jeevas
never get ashamed of its atrocities. Goddess Ganga descend from the heaven with
her powerful water currents and took shelter on the matted hair locks of Lord
Mahadeva, further she took a giant leap to Mount Himavan and came down to
Earth, later she streamed down to Pathal Loka with her pride. The ignorant
always end up in endless troubles.
It is unfortunate that there is no cure
for an ignorant and haughty person. The fire can be
put off with the water, one can take shelter under the trees from the scorching sun, the
untamed elephant can be brought under control with a sharp spike, the cows and
donkeys can be controlled with the stick, the illnesses can be cured with the
medicines in the form of water, powder, or pills, and the poisons can be
removed with some Manthrik formulas, the scriptures give out the complete details
for the cure of all the illnesses, surprisingly there is no cure for removing the ignorance in
Jeeva.
