Neethi Shathakam – Sri Bharthruhari
Virachitham
Chapter – 2 – Vidhwath Padhdhathi
The Kingdom where the scholars and intellectuals, who are prominent in Veda and Vedanga and Shastra/Vyakarana, Alankara, Tharkkashasthra, Vedantha, Meemamsa, relentlessly engaged in the practice of sharing the knowledge to their disciples, and the intellectuals with great poetic skills live in utter poverty and distress, reveals the inability of the ruler of that Kingdom. These intellectuals and scholars are considered as wealthiest without sufficient means. The person who does not know the preciousness of the diamond cannot fix the real price for it, which does not affect the preciousness of the diamond in any away.
Knowledge is a great wealth that has no value before the eyes of a thief,
hence knowledge is beyond word, mind, and intellect, and it enhances the
happiness of the knower. The beggar never stops for begging meals or wealth,
like the giver of knowledge never fails to give away knowledge, it keeps
multiplies in him, it won’t meet destruction even the hours of Mahapralaya. Oh!
Kings, therefore stop be arrogant and haughty before the scholars and
intellectuals who have the permanent wealth of knowledge with them. Who won’t be
jealous of the scholars and intellectuals?
Oh! Jeeva, do not disrespect or disgrace
the intellectuals or scholars who are the knower of Paramarththa. They have
abandoned the wealth and worldly matters like Trina/grass, and do not even try
to influence them with your wealth. If so, that would be futile effort to
fasten an untamed elephant with the thread, they do not give importance to
wealth, possession, fame, money, richness, and bondage; they have discarded all
like the grass. Ambhoja/Lord Bhrama can stop the swans to play in the cluster
of lotus flowers, but he cannot stop the marvelous skill of the swan to
separate water from the milk.
Oh! Jeeva, the Keyoora/armlets, or the
lustrous pearl ornaments around the neck, or rich fragrances, or scents on the
body or flowers on the shunt does not add charm to a person. In fact, the knowledge achieved from the
preceptor and the methodical approach to the knowledge gained only would multiply
the splendor of a person. In due course of time, all that adorned on the body
would meet its destruction, but the supreme knowledge gained from the preceptor
would remain as an ornament.
The most appropriate ornament for a male
is ‘Vidhya/knowledge’, it is well protected and hidden wealth of the male. This
Vidhya is capable to bring all the worldly pleasures, fame, wealth, and
richness as well. The Vidhya is superior as a preceptor, and it’s a protective shield
while moving on the unknown lands. The Vidhya is highly venerable and
prominent, no one would worship the wealth, and therefore the man who lacks
knowledge is equivalent to an animal.
The endurance is the protective shield of
the Jeeva, therefore, no armor is required to protect, anger is capable to kill a
person, the relative may work as Agni, the companions may work as medicinal
herbs, the pure knowledge would work as wealth, if a woman possesses Lajja/shame/
it would work as an ornament, she does not require extra ornament to enhance
her beauty. The person who has excellent poetic skills would not take interest
in the regime of the Kingdom.
Oh! Jeeva, listen to me, the
Sajjana/virtuous people have the inborn nature of kindness; they shower generosity
upon living as well as non-living things, it is pointless to talk about the
Dhurjjana possesses arrogance, pride, jealousy, and anger. The saintly people
remains blissful always, wise ruler/Kings will have thorough knowledge in
Neethishasthra, the intellectuals, and scholars will have humility, the enemies
are valorous by nature, the preceptors are serene by nature, an ideal woman will
have self-confidence, hence these kinds of people are always respected in society.
The knowledge removes the dullness and the foolishness of the Jeeva, it brings truthfulness and brightness in the usage of
words and it removes the sins, it enhances the happiness and it brings an abundance of fame to the intellectuals and scholars. The illustrious poets are
whose skills are unaffected by the Jara, Marana like fear, whose creations are
pious/devout, and their work reveals Navarasa/nine types of emotions, those poets
and their works would remain successful always.
