Neethi Shathakam – Sri Bharthruhari Virachitham

Chapter – 4 – Arththa Padhdhathi

Oh! Jeeva, I shall describe the nature of the people who chase after the wealth and worldly matters with the false notions that, let the differences in the caste and creed disappear in the Rasathala, let all those Guna and Ganas/virtues and moralities disappear below the Pathaloka, let the disciplines descend from the Mountains to Earth, let the virtuous and noble souls burn into ashes, let the enemies face a terrible death by the hard-hit of lightning, let me have all those wealth, fame, richness, possessions, companions, families, and happiness. Oh! Jeeva, the excessive interest in worldly matters and bondage would hurl the Jeeva into endless miseries, and force them to believe the virtues as Trina.

Usually, the noble souls who possess immense wealth, belongs to the higher clan are intelligent, will have a lot of admiration and respect from the society and well known for their virtues, must be excellent in speech, and remain respectful in the society. All those virtues, fame, intelligence, virtues, humility, simplicity, depending on the size of the wealth. Oh! Jeeva, the association of the wicked minister would bring destruction to a Kinga, excessive interest in the worldly matters /Bhoga would destroy an ascetic,  superfluous love and care of the child would destroy its virtue, Bhramin without the knowledge in the Veda would meet his destruction, wicked son bring destruction to the entire clan, the association with the deceitful people would bring destruction to morality, the interest in intoxicating drinks would bring shame to the individual, and the wealth utilized for charities without proper thought would harm the wealth.

Usually, the wealth meets three fates, either it may go to the noble souls/ascetics for Punyakarma, or it may be used for the comforts of the luxuries of the person who owned it, or it meets ruin without the usage of it. The diamond that gets rubbed to the sharp surface would get polished, the warrior who achieved victory in the battlefield and wounded badly would achieve the greatest honor, the male elephant lived a majestically serving the society and meets its latter years of age with dignity, the river once attractive and served the people with its brimming water would be admired always, even though that has little water flow due to the autumn season, the crescent moon gets all the admiration on the day of Purnima, a young woman who have undergone physical abuses strive hard to build her life with self-respect, the rich people who have lost wealth serving the poor and needy will be remembered and respected always, in this way all those noble souls shine in their own ways.

The poor Jeeva depends on the barley grains during the years of poverty dearly would love the Earth to wave off its hunger, once he attained wealth abandons the Earth and treats it as grass. The size of the wealth decides the approach of an individual to the things and the people surrounded. Oh! Rajan, if you want to milk the cow-like the Earth, takes care of your subjects as the calves. If the subjects of the Kingdom are well treated, protected, and safe-guarded, the Earth would definitely provide an abundance of natural wealth. Therefore, the country where the people are treated fairly would become the wealthiest and developed as well. Oh! Rajan, the Rajaneethi is like a prostitute, it may utter truth, sometimes lies, uses harsh words, sometimes words of promising, unpleasant, and kind, it is greedy of wealth, it provides charity, it is highly expensive, and represents richness, etc. Oh! Rajan, listen to me carefully,  a King should be wise, capable to impose law on his subjects, should have admiration from his people, should protect the twice-born/Bhramin, should provide an abundance of charities, should have thorough experience and knowledge in Rajaneethi, should be capable to protect its people as well. If the King does not possess the above virtues, what’s the use of his service to the Kingdom? Therefore the King should have the Shadgunas rule a Kingdom wisely.

Oh! Jeeva, why you chase after the wealth with your limited knowledge? The wealth of the Jeeva is predestined by Lord Bhrama, therefore, if a person strives hard in the desert which is lack of water to quench thirst, he would achieve the wealth which was already destined to him, definitely not more than that. Even if he approaches Mount Sumeru which is the storehouse of gold and minerals with greed, the funniest part is that he cannot achieve more than that was destined to him. Therefore be courageous and hopeful, do not be jealous of other’s wealth and engage in the wicked deeds. Oh! Jeeva, the vessel could carry only the water of its size, be it from the ocean or the well.
