Neethi Shathakam – Sri Bharthruhari
Virachitham
Chapter – 6– Sajjana Padhdhathi
Oh! Jeeva, I shall describe the virtues
of Sajjana who constantly remains in the association of virtuous, noble-souls,
saintly and ascetics engages in the self-less service to them, ultimately
achieve knowledge to remove the darkness of ignorance. They respect the
noble-souls, they will have humility and simplicity towards them, and they have
great respect to preceptors and have a great interest in learning Sadhvishaya.
They will have great control over sense and physical relationship with their
wives, they do not indulge in matters or conflicts which bring disgrace to
them, they will have great devotion at the lotus feet of supreme Lord Mahadeva,
and they will not have an association with wicked and deceitful people. I shall
reverentially prostrate before those noble-souls.
Oh! Jeeva, the inborn qualities of a noble-soul
is immense courage during the hours of threat and calamities, great simplicity
and humility in the arrival of sudden wealth, excellent speaking ability,
extremely valorous in the battlefield, respectful in the society, great
interest in learning of Shashthra and scriptures. These noble-souls have the performance
of charities as an ornament to their hands, prostration before the preceptor is
the ornament to head, truthful words are
the ornament to the face, Bhujabala to
win over the enemies as ornaments to hands, innocence is the ornaments to heart,
listening to the scriptures and sacred texts
are the ornaments to the ears, the above-mentioned virtues are the
ornaments of the Mahathma, even though they are not wealthiest.
These noble-souls will not take interest
in violence to animals or humans, they will not show interest in abducting the wealth
of others, they are truthful, they conduct charities as much as possible from
their own capacity, they will not take pleasure in the conversation about the
strangers or women, they will not have an interest in other's wealth, they will
have great respect to preceptors, they have humility, simplicity, respect and
kindness to all the people, they utilize their lifetime in gaining knowledge
in various Shastras. The sudden arrival of wealth makes the heart of the
Mahathma soft and supple as flowers, during the time of crisis and hardships
their heart becomes massive rock.
The Mahatmas/noble souls strictly follow justice and discipline; they won’t indulge in wicked deeds even during the
hours of the threat to their lives. They do not beg for alms before the wicked
people, the noble-souls will not ask for a favor from their companions or people
with little wealth. They conduct their life journey fearlessly; they are
unwavering and sincerely follow their preceptors. These noble-souls are highly
efficient to perform the extremely difficult ‘Asidharavrath’/conducting Tapasya
standing on the tip of the sword, which requires pure concentration.
The noble souls perform charities in
secret and they do not publicize their generosity, they receive guests with
great humility and do all that required for them, they perform various promising deeds but do not praise them or discuss them in the public, but they highly
praise the righteous deeds of others, they do not take pride in their own
wealth and status, they do not even think of disrespecting others in dreams,
they highly praise the righteous deeds of others, hence it is a kind of Tapasya
standing on the tip of the sword. These noble-souls are dispassionate like the
water poured on the hot iron that disappears in seconds, unlike the lotus leaf
that holds the water droplets, and when these water droplets enter into the seashell
creatures, and transforms into precious pearls. The Jeeva turns to Uththama/highly
virtuous, Madhyama/respectable and Adhama/wicked are entirely depends on their
association and the people surrounded by them.
An ideal son is the one who strictly follows
the orders of his parents and respects them, sincerely takes care of them, and
ready to sacrifice anything for their happiness. An ideal wife is a woman who
sincerely follows the command of her husband, always work for the welfare of
her husband, do not even think of the stranger not even in her dreams, and
serve the family of her husband and the elders with great respect and love, and
strictly follows celibacy. The ideal companion or relative is the one who is
promising and free from jealous at all circumstances, be it in the hours of happiness
or sorrows, and always work for the welfare of the companion. One thing is
definite, these three things are extremely difficult to achieve, and it is
available only for the people who are highly fortunate. The noble souls are
highly venerable; they earn respect and fame with their strict austerities,
hard work, and disciplines, not with the self-praise. They take great effort to
fulfill the justifiable desires of others; they handle the disrespect from the
wicked people with great endurance, they face the harsh words of them in utter
silence and make them feel guilty of their behavior.
