Vairagya Shathakam – Sri Bharthrihari Virachitham – Shivarcchanam

Chapter – 9 – Shivarcchanam

Oh! Thatha, no Jeeva is free from the material interest and bondage from the day the creation has begun, there is no one in the three worlds free from the female elephant like the worldly interest of lust, desire, pride, jealously, anger, ego, etc.  The human mind like the male elephant is powerless before that female elephant of worldly interest; therefore no one has found the poll to fasten that female elephant. The Jeeva is well known for its uncontrollable interest in worldly matters like richness, fame, prosperity, wealth, and excessive attachments to families, children, companions, relatives, and friends. There is no one in the three worlds who has achieved perfect control over worldly desires and bondage.

Oh! Jeeva, the ascetics who have obtained perpetual grace of the Supreme Lord, move fearlessly across the lands, they accept alms which was offered by pure and pious people, they associate with the saintly men and Sages, ponder over the Paramarththa Thaththva, Veda, Vedanta and scriptures, they conduct austerities and Tapas, Alas! They have no interest in worldly affairs or have no attachment with any of the living and non-living things, they blissfully roam in Paramanandha/supreme bliss. Oh! Jeeva, life on Earth is deplorable, one day all those dreams and expectations would shatter, the attractiveness of the body would ruin, virtues would get tarnished in the constant association with the wicked people, eventually, the moment will arise to bump into Yama, and at that moment you would be pushed to the state of intense trepidations. Oh! Jeeva, listen to me carefully; there is no safest heaven available other than the lotus feet of Madhananthaka, the supreme Lord Shiva who is the destroyer of Kamadeva. Oh! Jeeva, your wealth, beauty, and virtues would not help you during your troubled time, other than the meditation and contemplation upon the supreme Lord Parameshwara, hence strive hard to achieve Moksha.

The noble souls take pleasure in the meditation and contemplation upon the supreme Lord Maheshwara who is the commander of the Universe, or the supreme Lord Janardhana who resides as soul in Jeeva, these virtuous people have no sense of discrimination, even though they are passionately devoted to that supreme Lord Shiva who is adorned in the crescent moon on the matted hair locks. Oh! Jeeva, when are you going to lead that noble life, contemplating upon that supreme Lord Shiva, sitting on the white sand bed of the sacred river Ganga in the silence of full moon night, and constantly utter his sacred names with overflowing tears on the eyes? Oh! Jeeva, when are you going to lead a pious life, offering all that have owned as charities, with extreme kindness and compassion, remembering the miseries and sorrows of the worldly existence? When are you going to settle in the hermitage and take pleasure in the full moon night and contemplate upon the lotus feet of the Supreme Lord Shiva? Oh! Jeeva, The noble souls who have achieved an abundance of piousness, and have the eternal grace of that supreme Lord Shambhu would attain the fortune to stand before the sacred river Ganga, wearing loincloths and cry out “Oh! Shambho, Oh! Thripurari, kindly shower your compassionate grace upon us,” and spend days like moments.

Oh! Kamari, who burned the Lord of Kama into ashes, Oh! Prabho, when did I get freed from the grief depending on the Kings? Oh! Prabho, When did I get the opportunity to live a pious life taking a dip on the sacred river Ganga, and conduct veneration of you with the fresh alluring flowers of rich fragrances and fruits collected from the woods, and engage in meditation upon your lotus feet, seated on the bed of rocks or in the caves, living on fruits and fiber roots as meals, spending hours and hours in the association of saints and ascetics, and take pleasure in the Athmabodha with your grace?

Oh! Shambho, Oh! Prabho, when did I achieve the serenity of mind, living in solitude without any interest in worldly matters and bondage, living on alms, fearlessly roaming attired in directions as clothe, and engage in wash off my sins? The  Yogeeshwaras who live on alms, pure-hearted, take pleasure in Bhiksha, live anywhere in the world without any reservations, they abandon the wealth, fame, richness, possessions, wife, children, family, friends and relatives as a ‘Thrina’/Grass, while living on Earth they achieve Paramanandha Avabodha, with the grace of the supreme Lord attains Moksha effortlessly. Oh! Jeeva, the Moksha Sadhana is possible only for Yogeeshwara with the grace of the supreme Lord.
