Vairagya Shathakam – Sri Bharthrihari Virachitham– Avadhootha Charya

Chapter – 10 – Avadhoothacharya

Oh! Jeeva, I shall describe the practice of an Avadhootha/mendicant who is attired in ragged clothes, or Kaupeena, has no interest in worldly desires or matters, live on alms received from the noble souls, sleeps in the woods or burial grounds, wander fearlessly, keep themselves serene always, take immense pleasure in the meditation and contemplation of supreme Bhramam and disperse themselves in a transcendental state. Oh! Jeeva, understand the fact that these Avadhootha does not show interest to take up the regime of the three worlds; they discard them as ‘Thrina’/grass, like  the movements of fishes does not make indifference to the ocean water,  Alas! the entire Bhramanda cannot distract the mind of an Avadhootha.

Oh! Mother, Oh! Goddess Sri Mahalakshmi, you can freely move among the Jeevas, kindly do not approach me, because whoever under your clutches are  the slaves of comforts and luxuries, they cannot be Viraktha, the Avadhootha who has no desire for wealth, food, shelter or clothing has not relation with you. Avadhootha takes pleasure in the vessel made of leaves of Plasha, and they consume the Bhikshannam. The Yogeeshwara consider the Earth as his bed, his own hands as pillows, the sky as the roof, the cool wind as a fan, the moonlight as lantern and he takes great pleasure with the ‘Virakthi’ as his female companion, and sleep like a King.

The Yogeeshwaras are free from pride, jealous, ego, like impurities, they are contented with the Bhikshannam, keep themselves away from the crowd of the people, he acts independently, he never bothers about gain or loss, respect or disgrace, happiness or sorrows, pain or grief, and sincerely follows the Yogic way of living, he attires ragged clothes and takes a seat on the ground always immerses in Bhrmadhyanam which is supreme bliss provides the serenity of mind. The ordinary people mock at these Yogeeshwara and pass sarcastic comments “Is he Chandala or Bhramin or Shudra or Thapasa? Or is he a highly intelligent Yogeeshwara knower of various philosophies? After listening to all these, the Yogeeshwaras never get disappointed or angry, instead they move peacefully on their way.

Lord Bhrama created the serpents that have the nature of non-violence, gets its meal without any effort, he created the cows that take pleasures on the grass and sleeps on the floor, he created human with intellect, to cross the unfathomable ocean of worldly existence, and adopt Avadhoothavriththi to get rid of miseries and sorrows of worldly existence, and attain the Moksha. The Jeeva is created with the Thrigunas/Rajasik, Sathvik and Thamasik, the Yogeendhras win over these Trigunas and attain Moksha. The Yogeendras who are amiable, so even the animals in the forest would take shelter in them, they do not put hindrances to their Yoganidra, the Yogeendhras won’t get distracted with the nearness of them, even the animals in the woods won’t have the fear of them, and they would pleasingly crush their bodies on them with intense love and affection.  When did I get that fortune to live in the caves and hills of Himalayas, seated on the Padmasana posture, and contemplate upon that supreme Bhramam? When did I achieve the nearness of those antelopes in Yoga Nidra?

Oh! Jeeva, hands are the pure means of vessels, the Bhikshanna received as alms is the superior meal, the directions as clothes are vast and will not meet its ruin, the Mother Earth is the comfortable bed to sleep.   The noble-souls who have achieved the serenity of mind with the constant practice of meditation and contemplation upon that supreme Bhramam won’t find any displeasure or pleasure, gain or loss, happiness, or sorrow, pain or joy; eventually, they get washed off their sins as well as piousness. Oh! Matha: Medhini/Mother Earth, Oh! Thatha Marutha/wind as the father, Oh!  Sakha Agnideva/fire as a friend, Oh! Subandho Jala:/ water as relative, Oh! Bhrathar Vyoma/sky as a companion, I shall prostrate before you and bid farewell to all of you for the last time. I have achieved the fortune of your pure association, in this way, I have achieved that supreme knowledge, and I have abandoned all the desires and bondage, and taking shelter in the supreme Bhramam.
