Yaksha Prashnam – Sri Mahabharath

Chapter – 2 – The conversation between Yaksha and Yudhishtira 1 – 17

Sage Vaishampayana speaks to King Janamejaya/Son of King Pareekshith “Oh! Rajan, Yudhishtira saw the lifeless body of his four brothers who have the splendor of Lord Indra, on the riverbank, like the Jeeva that has met its fate at the end of Yuga, Yudhishtira found the bow and arrows close to the body of Bheema, Arjuna, Nakula, and Sahadeva, watching the mortal coil, he took a deep sigh of grief and shed tears, immersed in thought “who did kill the valorous brothers of mine? How did they meet death? There is no sign of visible mark of attack of weapons on their bodies, and there is no sign of people around, therefore whoever killed my brothers are not an ordinary under suspicious circumstances, better I should find out after drinking little water to put off my thirst. Was that committed by the wicked Shakuni as per the instruction of Duryodhana? It is impossible to trust them who have no knowledge of good and evil, he must have committed the crime with the help of his spies in the woods. I have not seen any change of color in the face or body of my brothers; therefore they have not died of poison. My brothers are extremely valorous; no one has the prowess to fight against them other than Yama. ” In this way, Mahabhahu Yudhishtira immersed in various thoughts and approached the river, prepared to take water. Soon he could hear a divine voice.

Yaksha speaks “Oh! Rajan, I am a pelican living in this water depending on the small fishes to put off my hunger. I have sent your brothers to the abode of Yama, for not following my orders, Oh! Rajan, I have a few questions to get clear answers from you, If not you can quench your thirst with the water and follow your brothers to Yama Loka. Therefore, do not be overconfident, this pond belongs to me for several years now. You can answer my questions and carry the water with you or consume at your heart’s content.”

Yudhishtira speaks “Oh! Bhavan, who are you? Are you the emissary of Rudra, Vasu, or Maruth? I do not believe a pelican could perform this huge task. Are you the emissary of Himavan, Pariyathra, Vindhya or Malaya Mountain? Oh! The valorous one, you have performed a mysterious as well as a mighty task which is impossible even for the deities, Gandharvas, Asuras, and Rakshasa. I am not aware of your contribution to it, and I am not aware of your idea behind it. I am anxiously waiting to know the purpose of it, and feel extremely fearful as well. My mind is spinning and paining, my heart is beating so fast, kindly answer me “Who are you?”
