Sri Shiva Bhujangaprayatha Sthothram – Sri Adishankaracharya – Lyrics and meanings

|| Jai Sriman Narayana ||

I shall meditate upon Lord Ganesha/Vakrathunda who has broken tusk, beloved son of Goddess ShivA, his cheeks are soaked in dribble due to high enthusiasm, he is surrounded by pack of honey bees, he has long trunk which is moving to and fro, he is the protector of three worlds, he has lustrous teeth, he is capable to eradicate all the perils and miseries, I shall prostrate before supreme Lord Shiva who has neither beginning nor end, he is Parambhramam who symbolizes greatest philosophies,  supreme bliss, purity,  supreme wisdom and knowledge, even  Lord Bhrama and Lord Hari  was incompetent to locate its origin, he is Mahashiva who is beyond human intellect or words, I shall prostrate before Panchavakthra who has five faces known as Eshana, Thathpurusha, Aghoram, Vamadevam and Sadhyojatham, he is majestically seated on the supreme throne along with Goddess Adishakthi, he is adorned in various precious gem decorated ornaments that lures the heart of worshiper, he has attractive reddish-brown matted hair locks adorned in serpents, crescent moon, and river Ganga, he is inseparable aspect from Goddess Parashakthi, he has glorious five faces such as Eshanam, Thathpurusham, Aghoram, Vamadevam and Sadhyojatham and has beautiful six  limbs,  he is beyond thirty six greatest philosophies, he is beyond human intellect, he has glorious legends,  I shall meditate upon supreme Lord Shiva whose half of the body has the luster of coral and the other part has the shine of blue/dark clouds, he is store house of virtues, he is Vapu  who crushed the pride of Kamadeva, and Apasmara, he is the source of wealth and auspiciousness, I shall prostrate before supreme Lord Shiva whose lotus feet are  adorned in flowers of Mandhara by deities and Lord Indhra, and they bow down before the lotus feet of Lord Shiva, that are the safest ferry to cross the unfathomable ocean of worldly existence, those lotus feet are reverentially attended by Goddess Bhavani, Oh! Jagannatha who is  Lord of Universe, Oh! My Lord, Oh! Lord of Gauri, Oh! Lord of distressed and desolate people who eradicates miseries and grief of worshiper, he has supreme radiance, he is too compassionate and dearest companion of living beings, I shall repeatedly prostrate before you, Oh! Viroopaksha who has unique eyes, Oh! Vishvesha who is the Lord of Universe, Oh! Vishvadhideva who is primordial, he is the essence of Veda, he is Shambhu and Shiva as well, he symbolizes auspiciousness, he has Agni, Surya, and Chandhra as three eyes, Oh! Deva, kindly protect us, kindly liberate us from worldly existence, kindly forgive all our accumulated sins and protect us always, Oh! Mahadeva who is mighty Lord,  Oh! Lord of Lords, Oh! Devadhideva, I shall repeatedly offer humble salutations, Oh! Purare who is the slayer of demons of Pura, Oh! Yamare who crushed the pride of Yama, Oh! Hara who eradicates sins of the worshiper, Oh! Dhayasheela who is extremely compassionate, he is relentlessly remembered by passionate devotees, Oh! Deva, kindly protect us,  Oh! Dhayalo who is ocean of mercy, there is no other deity who is extremely compassionate than Lord Shiva to the worshiper who is surrendered at his lotus feet, Oh! Shambho, kindly protect us, we are completely worn out and pathetic, kindly shower your auspicious grace upon us, otherwise it would harm your gracefulness and kindness towards your passionate devotees, Oh! Dhatha, I am standing before you with the vessel for alms, I am sincerely begging for alms, kindly provide us intense devotion and faith on your lotus feet at all times, Oh! Kripasheela, Oh! Shambho I shall remain grateful always, Oh! Sharva, I shall remain content if you consider me as a bull and mount on me, or if you consider me as impure and adorn as moon on your matted hair locks, or if you consider me as double standard one and adorn as serpent around your neck, eventually in whatever way you accept I would find immense satisfaction in that, Oh! Gireesha who is Lord of Mountains,  I do not know to trouble others, and I do not know to please you as well, Oh! Lord of sacred land Kashi, you are pleasing to all, even to the people who are added disgrace to wives,  sons, and father, Oh! Mahesha who is mighty Lord, I shall take refuge at your lotus feet, I do not know how to eulogize, or meditate, or worship according to the prescribed rite, or recite your hymns, I shall take refugee at the lotus feet which was the shelter place of son of Mrikandu who was frightful on the clutches of Yama, Oh! Shambho, who is the supreme physician and supreme cure for all the illnesses related to head, eyes, heart, infectious diseases, diabetics, fever, illnesses due to aging, toxic poison,  etc..Oh! Shambho, kindly eradicate all those illnesses, so that we can regain overall health instantly, Oh! Shambho, I am completely worn out of sufferings of poverty, distress, wretched, depressed, and perplexed, Oh! Shambho, you reside as soul in living beings, Oh! Prabho, kindly alleviate all our sufferings and protect us,  Oh! Thrayaksha, who has Agni, Surya and Chandhra as eyes, the moment your auspicious gaze fall upon a person, he/she would be blessed with the presence of Goddess Lakshmi,  abundance of wealth, auspiciousness, high status, pleasures like crown, Chamara, Chathram, garlands, elephant, majestic garments etc… I shall prostrate before supreme Goddess Bhavani along with  Lord Bhava who is the mother and father of the Universe and its living beings, I shall prostrate before Mridani who destroyed the Yagna of Dhakshaprajapathi, I shall prostrate before Shivanga and Shivangi  who has allocated half of the bodies to each other,  I shall repeatedly prostrate before supreme Lord Shiva and Goddess Ambika who has beautiful three eyes, Oh! Prabho, I am incompetent to describe your glories, kindly shower your compassionate grace on me, I have taken courage to describe your splendor according to my ability due to intense desire, kindly forgive me for the sin committed, as and when my ears deafening with the sounds of the bell  tied to the celestial bull of Yama, Oh! Deva, kindly appear before me on your celestial vehicle bull and pacify me as your child, in order to get rid of the fear of death, Oh! Shambho, when the emissaries of Yama with frightful appearances, merciless acts and harsh words   reverberates in my ears how could I calm my mind and meditate upon your lotus feet? Therefore I shall prostrate before you right now.  When I am on death bed with critical illnesses, accompanied with restlessness, desperate sighs and incoherent speeches, I would yearn to envision that marvelous form of Lord Shiva adorned in sacred Ganga on matted hair locks, when I am surrounded by children and companions at my death bed, weeping at the pitiable state of mine, Oh! Devadevesha, Oh! Gaureesha, Oh! Shambho, I should be able to utter your sacred names, Oh! Purare who is the slayer of demons of Pura, when the people surrounded at my death bed get anxious about my pathetic state of being critical and incoherent speeches, let me envision your marvelous form beautifully adorned in sacred ashes and serpents as ornaments. Oh! Deva, I shall prostrate before you, when I get frightened at the thought of tortures of the hell, Oh! Esha, I should be able to envision your marvelous form with the luster of dark clouds, adorned in crescent moon. Oh! Mahadeva, If I was to pass through the deserted and most difficult pathways, kindly obstruct me and guide through a pleasant way, Oh! Ardhendhumaule who is adorned in crescent moon on reddish-brown matted hair locks, Oh! Mahadeva, if I were to fall on the hellish tortures of Raurava, which causes intense trepidation by mere thought, Oh! Natha, I am helpless, who will rescue me? Oh! Parvathivallabha who is dearest darling of Goddess Parvathi, when I get terribly frightened at the sight of Yama who is wielded in fierce weapons, kindly protect me, I have no one other than you. Oh ! Neelakanda who has bluish throat, I am always tormented by the thought of fear of death, how can I overcome those trepidation and anxieties, you are the ultimate resting place for all, therefore I shall prostrate before you and take refuge at your lotus feet. Oh! Bhavanipathe, who is the beloved consort of Goddess Bhavani, I have not followed any righteous deed from childhood till the  age of death, I am extremely horrified at the thought of death, let me envision your lotus feet for the peaceful transition from the material existence without any fear, Oh! Jagannatha, it is unbearable to go through the repeated births, aging, and living in the darkness of womb as fetus, Oh! Dhayalo, who is too compassionate, I shall take refuge at your lotus feet, I have no one to help, wouldn’t shower your kindness? Oh! Maheshana, the sacred syllables of Panchakshara ‘Om Namashivaya’ is highly significant capable to eradicate untimely, accidental and unexpected deaths, it is capable to provide liberation from repeated births as well, therefore Oh! Esha, kindly bless me with a boon not to slip these sacred syllables from my thought/intellect as well as from my tongue, Oh! Amba who is beloved of Lord Shiva, adorned in crescent moon which spread cool rays, Oh! Devi, you are the supreme cure for worldly existence, I have been suffering so long, I shall take refuge at your lotus feet, kindly guide me to cross the worldly existence, a deity without an eye on forehead that symbolize massive fire, deity without the presence of lustrous consort Goddess Uma on the left, deity who is not adorned in serpent as ornaments all over the body, deity who is not adorned in crescent moon on reddish-brown matted hair locks are not considered as supreme Lord,  I shall never meditate upon a deity who has no bluish stain on the throat, deity who is not adorned in serpent as ornaments, deity who does not carry Kapala, deity who is not adorned in crescent moon on matted hair locks, or deity who has no consort on the left, Oh! Mahadeva, who is mighty Lord,  Oh! Shambho who is auspicious, Oh! Gireesha who is Lord of Mountains, Oh! Thrishoolin who is wielded in powerful trident, you are the essence of Universe and its living beings, and ultimately absorb them, I am not aware of any deity other than Lord Shiva, therefore Shivoham! Shivoham ! Shivoham ! Shivoham/I am Shiva, He is the source of Universe and its living beings, he has supreme radiance that illuminates the whole Universe, he is void of actions, he is the preserver of the Universe and its living beings, ultimately it immerses in him, therefore Shivoham ! Shivoham ! Shivoham ! Shivoham ! I am not aware of any  deity other than supreme Lord Shiva who is adorned in crescent moon on the crown, Lord Agni as eye on forehead, venomous serpents as ornaments all over the body, and beloved consort positioned on his own body, whoever worship Lord Shiva along with Goddess Ambika, with intense devotion and faith, whoever sings praising the splendor of supreme Lord Shiva along with Goddess Ambika, would be freed from fear of death, worshiper would be blessed with the eternal presence of Lord Shiva and Goddess Ambika in lotus like his/her heart. Oh! Shambho who is fond of decorating serpents as ornaments, I have composed the above verses in Bhujangaprayatha meter, whoever reads or listens to it with intense devotion and faith would attain virtuous offspring, longevity, good health, wealth, prosperity and happiness.
