Sri Shiva Sahasranama Sthothram || Poorva Bhaga:|| Lyrics and meanings 1 – 10

|| Jai Sriman Narayana ||

|| Om Nama Shivaya ||

I shall meditate upon Lord Vishnu who is omnipresent, attired in white majestic garments and has the radiance of sparkling moon, he has four arms carrying various weapons and has a joyful face, I shall earnestly pray to Lord Vishnu to remove all our obstacles.

My humble salutation to Maharishi Vedavyasa, who is the personification of wisdom and intelligence, he has broad eyes that has the resemblance to the lotus leaf, he is the cause of spreading knowledge in the whole of the Universe.

My humble salutation to Lord Shambhu who is the consort of Goddess Uma/Umapathi, he is the preceptor of Sura/Lords/Suraguru, he is cause of  the Universe/Jagathkaranam, he is decked in serpents as ornaments, carries deer head in hand, he is the Lord of all the living beings/Pasoonampathi, he has Lord Surya, Lord Chandra and Lord Agni as his eyes, he is most desirable to Lord Mukunda, he is the safe haven for passionate devotees and provider of abundance of boon, he is Lord Shiva who is the personification of all the auspiciousness.

Yudhishtira said “ Oh! Pithamaha, kindly narrate the sacred names of Jagathpathi/Lord of the Universe, Lord Shambu who has golden complexion, personified as Universe, preceptor of the Devas and Asuras, He is the Lord of Lords, and he is primordial and personification of auspiciousness.”

Bheeshma Pithamaha replied “ Oh! Yudhishtira I am incapable to describe the glories of Supreme Lord Mahadeva, he is omnipresent, he is impossible to witness with the bare   eyes.  He is the creator of Lord Bhrama, Lord Vishnu and all deities, he is the Lord of Lords, and he is venerated by Lord Bhrama, all the deities, spirit and others.   He is superior to Prakrithi and he is known as Purusha, he is meditated by virtuous, Sages and Rishis who is aware of eternal truth, he is Parambhramam/omnipresent/omniscient and he is the cause and effect. He is Deva Deva Prajapathi /Lord of Lords and all the living beings, he strike at the foundations of Prakrithi and Purusha, ultimately create Bhramam out of it.  How it would be possible for a human who undergoes repeated birth and death to describe the glories of Lord of Lords?  Is it capable for a human to describe the glories of supreme Lord Parameshwara, other than Lord Narayana who carries conch, wheel and mace?    Lord Vishnu who is the knower of All, he is highly intellectual and possess supreme qualities, unconquerable, highly resplendent and he has auspicious eyes, he witnesses everything with his eyes of Yogic qualities.  Oh! Bharatha, King of Kings,  supreme Lord Krishna is spread all over the Universe due to his devotion towards Lord Rudra, pleased with his intense penance on the sacred land of Bhadharya/Badri.”
