Sri Shivabhujanga Prayatha Sthothram by Sri Adishankaracharya – Lyrics & meanings

|| Jai Sriman Narayana ||

I shall meditate upon Lord Vakrathunda who is most beloved of Lord Shiva, he has attractive cheeks and long trunk, he is the protector of the Universe, he has lustrous trunk, and he is capable to destroy all the perils.  I shall meditate upon supreme Lord Shiva who is primordial, he is eternal, he is absolute truth, he is the symbol of eternal bliss and wisdom, he is beyond Thrigunas, he was impossible to recognize by Lord Bhrama and Lord Vishnu after a meticulous search for the beginning and end of Linga, he is beyond words and intellect, he is Parambhrama.  I shall prostrate before Panchavakthra/five faced Lord Shiva along with Goddess Sri Shakthi who are seated on the magnificent throne, he is decked in various precious ornaments all over his body, he has attractive matted hair locks, he has serpents, crescent moon, and sacred Ganga on his matted hair locks,  he has Lord Surya, Lord Chandra and Lord Agni as three eyes,  it is impossible to be aware of the philosophies of six faces known as Eshanam , Thathpurusham, Aghoram, Sadhyojatham, Vamadevam and Adhomukham and he is byond thirty six types of Thathvavidhya.  I shall meditate upon supreme Lord Shiva whose half of the body has crimson color and the other half is bluish which has the appearance of the precious gem Indhraneela, he is Adhvatheeya and mixed with the three gunas, he is the slayer of Lord Kamadeva.   I shall meditate upon the lotus feet of supreme Lord Shiva who is thoroughly familiar by Goddess Bhavani, his lotus feet is worshiped by all the deities and demons whose head is adorned in Mandhara, he is the safest ferry to cross the ocean of Samsara.  Oh ! Jagannatha/He is the Lord of the Universe,  I shall prostrate before you.   He is the consort of Goddess Gauri, he is the safest heaven to people surrendered to him, he is the destroyer of grief and sorrows of his passionate devotees, he has supreme brilliance, and he is the closest associate of people who are surrendered.  Oh! Mahadeva, Oh! Devesha, Oh! Devadideva, Oh! Smarare/deserved to be remembered, Oh! Purari/destroyer of Thripura, Oh! Yamare/slayer of Yama, I shall continuously recite your glorious names and prostrate before you, therefore kindly protect us.    Oh! Virupaksha, Oh! Vishwesha, Oh! Vidhyadhikesha/symbol of wisdom and knowledge, he is the essence of Veda, Oh! Shiva, Oh! Thryambaka/who has three eyes; I shall kindly request you to protect us and bless us with your eternal presence.   Oh! Dhayalo/compassionate, you are the safe haven for the people surrendered at your lotus feet, therefore kindly protect us.  Otherwise you will be considered as merciless to your devotees, hence kindly shower your mercy on us.  Oh! Shmbho, this is an appropriate time to offer charity and I am that vessel and you are the provider of alms, I am not going to ask anything other than firm devotion at your lotus feet and I shall remain extremely pleased with that alm.  Oh! Sharva, if you have considered me as a bull, then it is your celestial vehicle which you will be seated to explore the Universe, if you have treated me as sinful subsequently you have crescent moon on your matted hair locks, if you have considered me as atheist, then you have venomous serpent which has two tongues as your ornament, ultimately all those adorned by you will remain auspicious forever.  Oh! Gireesha, I am not capable to harm others, I am not aware of how to please you.  You are too compassionate and you are easily forgiving nature even to the people who have ill treated their wives, father and children.  Oh! Mahesha, I shall sincerely meditate upon your lotus feet, which was thrashed the pride of Lord Yama to protect Markandeya who was besieged with extreme fear of death, Oh! Lord, I shall venerate your lotus feet, though I am not aware of any particular methods of worship or recitation of hymns. I am not aware of any other deity other than supreme Lord Shiva who has bluish throat, decked in venomous serpents as ornaments, carries skull, blazing eye on the forehead, matted hair lock decked in crescent moon, with the perpetual presence of his consort on left side.  I am not meditating upon any other deity who does not have the above specifications.
