Sri Rudra Ashtakam by Goswami Thulasidas – Lyrics and meanings

I shall prostrate before Lord Rudra who is personified as Eshana, he is the provider of highest of pieties liberation from the repeated births, he is Vibhu who is omnipresent, he symbolizes absolute Bhramam, he is the essence of Veda, he is absolute truth, he is beyond Thrigunas / Rajas, Thamas and Swathika, he is beyond perception of senses, he is indifferent/desire less/motionless, he is embodied as sky and dwells in the sky.    I shall meditate upon Lord Rudra who has no specific forms, he symbolizes Pranava ‘Om’, he is the cause of Universe and its living beings, he represents fourth state of pure consciousness, he is the Lord of Mountains, he symbolizes supreme wisdom, he is the Lord who carries deadly poison in his throat, he is dreadful, he is Mahakala who appears at the end of each Yuga, he is compassionate, he symbolizes virtues, he guides to cross the ocean of Samsara, he is beyond perception.  I shall meditate upon Lord Rudra who dwells in the freezing mountain peaks, he has the luster of Conch, he has supreme splendor, he is charming and has the supreme brilliance of crores of Adithyas, he is decked in crescent moon and sacred Ganga on his matted hair locks, his forehead has the luster of moon, his neck is decorated with the serpents.  I shall meditate upon supreme Lord Rudra who is decked in magnificent ear rings, he has broad eyes, his face is serene and ever pleasing, he has bluish throat and he is too compassionate to his devotees, he is attired in skin of animal and decked in garlands of skulls, he is beloved to all the living beings, he is Shankara who is the symbol of auspiciousness, he is worshiped by all.    I shall meditate upon Lord Rudra who is the consort of Goddess Bhavani,  he is absolutely divine, he has the form of Prachanda/excessively violent; he is supreme among the deities, he is beyond perception, he is indissoluble, he is Aja who has no birth, he has the supreme brilliances of crores of Adithya, he is wielded in Trident and perform the destruction.  I shall meditate upon Lord Rudra who is not bounded by Time, he is the symbol of auspiciousness, he symbolizes the deluge at the end of Yuga, he is the protector of virtuous people, he is the Lord of the cities of Thripura, he symbolizes eternal bliss, he destroys lust and desires in his devotees, Oh! Manmadhari/who is the slayer of Lord Manmatha, kindly bless us.  Who does not surrender to the lotus feet of Lord Rudra who is the delight of Goddess Uma, and who does not perform veneration of supreme Lord Rudra will not have any happiness or peace or alleviation of sorrows and grief, in this life or in the coming lives.   Oh! Bhoothathinatha who dwells as soul in the living beings and Lord of all the living beings, kindly bless us.  Oh! Shambho I am not aware of any kind of Yogic practices, or recitation of sacred hymns, or method of veneration of your lotus feet, I shall remain your humble devotee, Oh! Prabho, kindly protect us from Jara/aging, Janma/rebirth, Dhukka/sorrows and miseries.


The sacred hymns of Lord Rudra was composed by Vipra in order to please Lord Hara, therefore whoever reads or listens to these sacred hymns with utmost faith and devotion would  remain always blessed by Lord  Shambhu.
