Sri Mahakala Sahasranama is
sacred verses praising the glories of Lord Mahakaleshvara, one of the 12
Jyothirlinga Kshethra located in Avanthi/Ujjain, these thousands of sacred
names of Lord Mahalakala was narrated by Lord Krishna to his closest associate
Sudhama while they were under the tutelage of Maharishi Sandheepani, and Lord
Krishna concludes with the abundance of the meritorious rewards attainable through
the recitation of Sri Mahakala Sahasranama.
I shall prostrate before supreme Lord
Mahadeva who is eternal bliss, he symbolizes renunciation, he is Alarkesha/fierce,
he is Lord of celestial Apsaras, he is Lord of Adikalpa, he represents Agasthya and Akroora, he is Aruneshvara/Sun,
he is deserved to be eulogized, he eradicate worldly bondage of worshiper, he
is Ishvara who is worshiped by Lord Indra, he is Lord of all the living
creatures, he has the luster of blue lotus, he is the Lord of Lords, he
destroys jealous and impatience in worshiper, he gracefully accepts offerings,
he is Indheevara/lustrous, he is immersed in welfare of the Universe and its living
beings, he lures the heart of Goddess Uma,
he is the Lord of Uma, he symbolizes illusion and supreme bliss, he had
provided various boons to celestial Apsara Urvashi, he symbolizes boisterous
sounds and remnants, he is splendid, he symbolizes Yekaroopa, he is supreme Lord, he is Yekathmaka, he represents
Airavatha/ who fasten the clouds, he is firm, he is the provider of all kinds
of auspiciousness to worshiper, he represents Omkara and vigor, he consumed the
venomous poison of Halakala and won over the deadly toxin, he symbolizes
supreme medicine for incurables, he is the Lord of medicines, he is eternal, he
is the slayer of demon Andhakasura, he is Achyutha/imperishable, he is
Aprameyathma/inscrutable spirit, he represents terminology, he is the provider
of wealth/horses etc.. to worshiper, he destroys enemies, he is the Lord of sacred land of
Avanthi, he is decked in various precious ornaments, he dwells in the sacred
land of Avanthi, he is the protector of sacred city Avanthi, he is
Amara/immortal, he is the Lord of Immortals, he destroys the enemies of
deities, he symbolizes amorous sport, he fulfils all the desires of the
worshiper, he is too compassionate, he is worshiped by Goddess Kamala, he is
decked in garland of skulls, he destroys the evil effect of Kali era, he
destroys Lord Kamadeva, he represents pure joy, he is beyond time and space, he
has brownish colored matted hair locks and he represents tens of millions of
sacred ponds, he symbolizes the end of Kalpa, he is the cause for the deluge at
the end of Kalpa, he is wise.
