Sri Mahakala Sahasranama is sacred verses praising the glories of Lord Mahakaleshvara, one of the 12 Jyothirlinga Kshethra located in Avanthi/Ujjain, these thousands of sacred names of Lord Mahalakala was narrated by Lord Krishna to his closest associate Sudhama while they were under the tutelage of Maharishi Sandheepani, and Lord Krishna concludes with the abundance of the meritorious rewards attainable through the recitation of Sri Mahakala Sahasranama.



I shall prostrate before supreme Lord Mahadeva who represents Lord of Time and death as well, he represents Time and carries out the movement of wheel of time, he symbolizes  deluge at the end of Kalpa, he represents Kalpavriksha/wish fulfilling tree, he is Lord of living beings,  he is the Lord of divine cow Kamadhenu, he symbolizes supreme bliss, he is the provider of happiness to worshiper, he is decked in marvelous crown, earrings, protective shield and smeared in rich fragrant musk, he carries skull, he is smeared in rich fragrant camphor, he represents all kinds of art forms, he destroys sins, illnesses, ill fame and injustice on worshiper, he is Kukudeshvara and Karkadesha as well, he gives birth in illustrious clan and he is the protector of kinfolks, he is Lord of grains and farming field, he is smeared in highly fragrant vermilion, he is very fond of flowers of Kundha, he represents grains, he is the destroyer of lust and desires, he burnt Lord Kamadeva into ashes, he is dark complexioned, he symbolizes mercy, he is immersed in the veneration of Lord Krishna, he represents spring season, he  is worshiped by  Rishi Kanva and Keshava, he is Kameshvara who has won over passion, he is Lord of all art forms, he has bluish throat, he has the luster of vermilion, he carries Kapala/skull, he is Karabesha, he is the provider of virtuous offspring, he is Karkesha/fair and charismatic, he symbolizes skill and intelligence, he represents cellulose and Kosha/sheaths such as Annamayakosha, Pranamayakosha, Manomayakosha, Vijjanamayakosha and Anandhamayakosha, he is beloved of Kaushika, he is Lord of celestial bull, he destroys  darkness of ignorance, his lotus feet is worshiped by deities, he works for the welfare of the deities, he is Gageshvara who represents sacred hymns and scriptures, he carries weapons Gadga, Geda, and Gala/noose, he is the commander of Gandava region, he is Lord of Mountains, he is the consort of Goddess Girija, he is attired in the skin of elephant, he represents Gauthama, he is the King of mountains, he is Gangadhara who is adorned sacred Ganga on his matted hair locks, he is store house of virtues.
