Sri Mahakala Sahasranama is
sacred verses praising the glories of Lord Mahakaleshvara, one of the 12
Jyothirlinga Kshethra located in Avanthi/Ujjain, these thousands of sacred
names of Lord Mahalakala was narrated by Lord Krishna to his closest associate
Sudhama while they were under the tutelage of Maharishi Sandheepani, and Lord
Krishna concludes with the abundance of the meritorious rewards attainable
through the recitation of Sri Mahakala Sahasranama.
I shall prostrate before supreme Lord Mahadeva who is personified as
ascetic Yajjavalkya, he represents performance of Yajja, he caused impediments
to the Yajja of Dhakshaprajapathi, he preserves Yajja practices, he symbolizes
Yajja, he graciously accepts oblation from Yajja, he causes successful
completion of Yajja, he symbolizes Yajja and its Anga/requisites, he is
deserved to be worshiped with fire sacrifices, he represents performer of Yajja
and act of fire sacrifice as well, he is the provider of Yashass/fame, he
symbolizes Yashass and he inspires to attain fame, he is adorned in sacred
thread across the chest/Yajjopaveetha, he is the provider of boon to Yasodha,
he represents Lord Yama, he represents the responsibilities of Yama, he
protects from the evil caused by the emissaries of Yama, he is personified as supreme ascetic who lives on
alms, he takes immense pleasure in the Jalakreeda on the sacred waters of
Yamuna, he is favorable to Yajjaseni who is born from Yajja, he is fond of
grain and symbolizes grain, he is charming and young, he is the protector of
Universe and its living beings, he is the essence of Rigveda, he eradicates all
kinds of illnesses, he has celestial
vehicle dog/Kalabhairava, he is powerful warrior in the battle fields, he
represents wealth, he is the Lord of wealth, he performs the task of Lord of
wealth, he is Rameshvara who is the Lord of Rama, he represents the sacred
syllable Ra, he is beloved of Rama and Raama/Goddess Sri Mahalakshmi as well,
he represents divine sounds, he is vicious in battle field, he is the protector
of living beings, he eradicates the three kinds of Rina every mortals born with
three types of debts, such as Dhaiva Rina, Rishi Rina and Pithru Rina/mortals born
with three kinds of debts, he is the protector of souls in the form of
King, he represents auspicious tree and
sounds, he is the provider of various emotions, he is very affectionate to
Ramachandra, he is the King who protects souls and he is the commander of Rakshasa, he
provides various boons to Rakshasa, he represents Rama who is the annihilator
of Rakshasa, he is a great charioteer who takes immense pleasure in riding the
chariot, he is eternal, he is favorable to Ravana, he represents boisterous
sounds, he is the King of seasons, he has provided boons to Devi Rathi and he
represents Ranthideva/Kalabhairava who provide various boons to worshiper, he
represents Ravi, he is Lord of wealth who provides abundance of wealth such as
palace to worshiper, he is supreme ascetic, he is the cause of delusion at the
end of Kalpa, he embodied as Earth and carries out the functions of the same,
he represents feelings and emotions in living beings.
