Sri Shiva Sahasranama Sthothram – Sri Mahabharath - Lyrics and meanings

There are more than eighteen Sri Shiva Sahasranama Sthothras available from various Puranas, Sri Mahabharath and Thanthric scriptures, and the well known is described in seventeenth chapter of Anushasana Parvam of Sri Mahabharath.  It was the end of famous battle between the Pandavas and Kauravas, Lord Krishna advices Dharmaputhra to get blessing from Bheeshma Pithamaha who was lying in the bed of arrows and waiting for his death in auspicious Uththarayana.  Bheeshma Pithamaha narrates righteousness of a ruler/Rajyadharma and Moksha Dharma, and blesses Dharmaputhra.  After listening, Dharmaputhra requests Bheeeshma Pithamaha to narrate the thousands of sacred names of Lord Parameshvara, but Bheeshma Pithamaha dishearten Dharmaputhra saying that he is not eligible to describe those thousands of sacred names of Lord Shiva, therefore he appealed to Lord Krishna to describe them.  Lord Krishna describes the thousands of sacred name of Lord Shiva that was narrated by Sage Upamanyu, further he mentioned that initially  the ten thousand sacred names of Lord Shiva  was narrated by Lord Bhrama, and he had chosen the most significant among them and incorporated in it.



The highly propitious hymns of Sri Shivasahasranama Sthothra was composed by Rishi Upamanyu, it has Anushtup as Chandas, presiding deity is Sri Sambasadhashiva, it has Sthirasthanu as Beejam, Sriman Srivardhana Jagadh as Shakthi, Devadhipathi as Keelakam, it is receited to get blessings of Sri Sambasadhashiva.



I shall prostrate before Lord of Goddess Parvathi, who is serene and seated on the lotus flower, he is decked in magnificent crown decorated in crescent moon, he have five faces and three eyes, he is wielded in powerful weapons of trident, Vajram, Gadgam, Parashu, and right hand on Abhaya hastha posture, he has Naga/serpents, Pasha/nooze, Ganda, Angusham on his left side, he is adorned in various ornaments and garland of crystal.  I shall meditate upon Lord Shambu, he is Umapathi who is the consort of Goddess Uma, he is the preceptor of Lords,  I shall meditate upon supreme Lord Shiva who  is the cause of  Universe and its living beings, I shall meditate upon supreme Lord who is embellished in King of serpents all over the body, he is attired in skin of elephant, I shall meditate upon supreme Lord Shiva who is the Lord of all animals, I shall meditate upon supreme Lord  who has Lord Surya, Lord Chandra and Lord Agni as eyes, I shall meditate upon supreme Lord who is beloved of Mukundha,  I shall meditate upon supreme Lord who is safest haven of passionate devotees, he is the provider of abundance of meritorious reward to his worshiper, I shall meditate upon supreme Lord Shiva who symbolizes auspiciousness.
