Neethi Shathakam – Sri Bharthruhari
Virachitham
Chapter – 8– Dhairya Padhdhathi
Oh! Jeeva, I shall describe the nature of
the courageous people, who never give up easily and strive hard to achieve the goal. The deities and demons together engaged in
the churning of the milky ocean for the nectar of immortality, the numerous
precious gems did not satisfy the deities or it did not distract them from their task,
they did not stop when the Halahala poison emerged out of the ocean which was capable
to destroy the whole Universe, they have continued the churning the ocean until
they have achieved the nectar of immortality. The cowards do not show up the
courage to initiate any task, because of the fear of obstacles; they did not
accomplish the task and easily give up when the minor hindrances occur.
Oh! Jeeva, the virtuous and highly
skilled people never give up the task entrusted upon them or retire, until and unless they achieve
success in it. These successful people make the Earth comfortable place to live
in, these people do not hesitate to leave the worldly matters and bondage and find
peace in the woods, they are not hesitant to sleep on the ground keeping their hands
as a pillow, and these powerful people have made the Kingdom of great splendor with their
braveness, at times they may adopt the life of an ascetics and undertake
complete austerities, sometimes they may take pleasure in their own hard work,
sometimes they may abandon the sophisticated life and attire in ragged
clothes, and sometimes they may attire
in magnificent silk clothes. These courageous people will not fear of loss of
wealth or possessions or fame or family, they are highly skilled to accommodate
themselves into any circumstances. They are not attached to worldly matters or bondage;
therefore they do not find difficulties in abandoning them.
Oh! Jeeva, the courageous people do not
worry about the sarcastic comments of the people who are skilled in social
ethics or they do not get over-excited in other’s praise, or the possession of immense wealth, in the same manner, they do not break emotionally at the loss of wealth or lose hopes at the time of the nearness of the death or the end of Yuga. These courageous people will not abandon disciplines or righteousness at any circumstances in their lives, which
they have received as wealth from the Sajjanas.
Oh! Jeeva, I shall describe the characteristics
of a courageous person as the one who does not fall for the fleeting look of
attractive women, the person who does not burn in the flame of anger, the person who does not have an interest in worldly matters, comforts, luxuries, and bondage,
these kinds of courageous people win over the three worlds. The people who
possesses virtues, morality, free from impurities like lust, desire, anger,
greed, and pride, and the interest in worldly matters and bondages remains
highly respected. The courageous persons may sink in the grief, but it would
not harm their braveness. The tip of fire always faces upwards, in this manner,
the braveness of a courageous person is impossible to break, as it is
impossible to keep the tip of the flame downwards. The courageous people will
not lose their confidence even if they pushed down from the hills or mountains,
or stuck under the sharp teeth of the venomous serpent, or fallen in the massive
fire, the courageous people will not leave their tendency to face the danger
bravely and fight against it. The person who has possessed the predominant
qualities like uprightness, courage, and virtues, which are most approving
qualities to the whole world, consider the colossal fire as water, and
the ocean as a small watercourse, the Mount Meru as a small heap of stone, the King of
forest lion as a deer, the venomous serpent as a garland, and the toxic poison as
nectar.
Oh! Jeeva, the Sajjanas are thoroughly
aware of the impermanent nature of the worldly matters and the bondage, like
the trees cut down comes into life after a certain period of time, the crescent moon shines brilliantly on the night of Poornima, therefore they do not take pleasure in the impermanent nature of the Prakrithi. Hence, they keep themselves blissful always, do not get over-excited
or grieve over the happenings. Oh! Jeeva, I shall describe the ornament to a
person, prosperity and wealth is achieved with the association of virtuous,
Parakrama/valorousness requires control of speech, the achievement of Gnana/wisdom
is possible only with the abandonment of interest in worldly matters and
bondage, knowledge in Shastras can be achieved with humility, perseverance and
endurance. The wealth utilized for charitable purposes, the performance of strict austerities and vow
without anger, high endurance, Dharma without deceitfulness are the precious
ornaments to a Jeeva.
