Vidura Neethi – Sri Mahabharath – Chapter -  4

Chapter – 3 - The conversation between Vidura and King Dhritarashtra – 41 -60

Vidura speaks “ Oh! Bharatharshabha, If you want to know the closeness, truthfulness, and sincerity of a companion, you should ask favor from them, no matter wealthy or not. Oh! Rajan, grief destroys the loveliness, strength, courage, and wisdom of a person; eventually, it would push the person to permanent ailments. Oh! Rajan, the grief hinders the fruitfulness of the task of the person, it would cause to wither the body, and the enemies would take pleasure in it, therefore do not allow the grief to overrule you. Oh! Rajan, human beings are repeatedly dying and born, all the creatures repeatedly meet their ruin and growth, human repeatedly beg for alms and receive alms, humans repeatedly undergo grief or grieving over others.  Oh! Rajan, therefore the intellectuals who have a thorough understanding of these natural phenomena and the person who has perfect control over sense would not react to grief or happiness, poverty or prosperity, gain or loss, death, or birth.  Oh! Rajan, Panchendhriyas are unstable and unpredictable as well, like the water filled in a pot with holes, they wedge with the material matters and people effortlessly.”

Dhritarashtra speaks “ Oh! Mahamathe, Oh! Vidura, I have mistreated Yudhishtira who resembles the colossal fire; therefore he will kill all my sons who are dull-minded in the great battlefield. I am foreseeing a huge damage to my clan; as a result it shoves me into intense grief. Oh! Intelligent one, kindly advises the words which could remove my perplexities.”

Vidura speaks “Oh! Sinless one, if you want to obtain peace concentrate on these following 1) learn scriptures and gain knowledge 2) conduct Tapasya/austerities and vows, 3) control over sense/get freed from material matters and bondage 4) abandon Lobha. Oh! Rajan, the supreme knowledge/knowledge of self would remove fears and anxieties, Tapasya would provide an abundance of piousness, serving the ascetics and Sages would provide Gnana/wisdom, and abandonment of interest in worldly matters and bondage would provide utmost serenity.  The Moksharththis won’t desire to attain piousness by performing charities, and various Vedic rituals and practices, they leave interest in worldly matters and bondage, keep themselves free from jealous, anger, ego, lust, pride etc. Oh! Rajan, the well-performed Adhyayanam/practice of learning scriptures and sacred texts, profound knowledge in the usage of armaments, the Punyakarma performed without any personal motive, and Tapasya would always bring fruitful results.  Oh! Rajan, people who constantly engage in conflicts or arguments won’t get sleep, even if they sleep on the most luxurious mattress. They do not take pleasure in a passionate relationship with women or Sthuthipadaka/the people who praise the qualities. The people who engage in fights with families and relatives could not follow Dharma, they cannot achieve peace or serenity, or earn respect in the family or society. The people who engage in the fight with the relatives do not accept fruitful advice; therefore it is definite that they cannot attain peace or welfare, eventually meets destruction. Oh! Rajan, Yoga is the practice to achieve something which is not innate in you, and the Kshema is protecting something which is in possession. Oh! Rajan, these are definite that the cow provides milk, Bhramin engages in Tapasya/austerities and vow, Sthree is the means for the physical and mental pleasure, and relatives are means for threat and fear. Oh! Rajan, a strong rope is created with the combined usage of delicate thread, in this way; the togetherness of virtuous relatives would provide immense courage and strength to face the hardships. Oh! Bharatharshabha, if the fire log put alone would cause smoke, if it was placed together with the number of logs, it would produce huge flames, in this way, the togetherness of virtuous relative’s works during the hours of crisis. Oh! Dhritarashtra, listen to me carefully, the person who shows arrogance and mischievousness to women, twice-born/Bhramin, relatives, and cows would meet immediate destruction, like the ripened fruit fall down from the hook of the tree.  Oh! Rajan, the tree which stands alone, even though it’s huge and strongly rooted, would face its destruction in a powerful whirlwind.”
