Vidura Neethi – Sri Mahabharath – Chapter
- 7- 2
Chapter – 2 - The conversation between
Vidura and King Dhritarashtra – 21 - 40
Vidura speaks “Oh! Bharatharshabha,
people who desire progress and welfare in life do not engage in conflict with relatives. Oh! Bharathavamshaja, the happiness should be shared with the
relatives, it is necessary to share meals, love, and important information with
the relatives, it would enhance the welfare of the family, therefore enmity
with the relatives should be avoided. Oh! Rajan, relatives can either make you
or break you, if they are virtuous they would bring progress in your life,
otherwise, they would destroy you. Oh! Rajendra, you have great respect for the
virtuous people, why do not you respect the Pandavas and treat them as your
children? Be kind and compassionate to them, you will remain unconquerable
under their protection. Oh! Rajan, if the wealthiest relative creates trepidation,
by mere witnessing him in another person like a deer met a hunter, all the sins
of that person would go to the wealthiest relative. Oh! Rajan, if Pandavas or
Kauravas one of them would definitely get killed in the epic battle, it would certainly
put you in intense grief; it would push you in extreme guilt as well. Therefore
think about all those forthcoming battles and its after-effects. Oh! Rajan,
life is unpredictable, do not commit mistakes and regret later, hence think
before you act. Oh! Rajan, the intelligent people will have a clear cut idea of
the aftereffects of their actions; they foresee actions and its consequences, so they
do not perform anything which could bring permanent grief. Illustrious
Shukracharya/Bhargava who is the composer of Neethishasthra is the only one who
did not act against Dharma. Oh! Nareshwara, you are the chief of the clan of
Kurus, it is your responsibility to remove the sins of Kauravas who have
committed various sins. They put the
Pandavas into extreme miseries and troubles; you have to perform the atonement for
all those sins. Oh! Narashreshta, all your sins would get removed if you
crowned the Pandava as the King of Hasthinapur, in that way you can become
sinless, and remain respected in the society. Oh! Rajan, the person who
sincerely follows the advice of the intellectuals and its consequences, performs
the tasks with thorough understanding, in this way they would achieve success
and fame. Oh! Rajan, humility destroys the sufferings of poverty, valorous
nature would protect from troubles, endurance would bring control on
Krodha/anger, strict performance of religious and spiritual rites would destroy
inauspiciousness. Oh! Rajan, the nature of a person can be understood by his
family members, status, home, behavior, eating habits, and way of dressing. Oh!
Rajan, the co-ordination of mind, secret tasks, and knowledge would work well.
Oh! Rajan, it is dangerous to have friendship with a wicked, the intelligent
people will not have friendship with the wicked people, and it is like a well
covered with grass. Oh! Rajan, intelligent people will not have friendship with
these kinds of people 1) pride and haughty 2) dull-minded 3) gets angry easily
4) adventurous 5) Adharmi. Oh! Rajan, it is important to achieve friendship
with these kinds of people 1) grateful 2) person who sincerely follows Dharmic
rites 3) truthful 4) person with a wide perspective 5) person with firm devotion
6) person who has control over the sense 7) person who sincerely follows
disciplines 8) Person who does not abandon a friend at the time of crisis. Oh! Rajan, it is difficult to achieve perfect
control over sense, it is equivalent to death. If the Indhriyas goes out of
control, it would bring complete destruction; even the deities have met their
destiny in it. Oh! Rajan, the qualities
like 1) pleasant nature 2) free from jealous 3) Kshama/endurance 4) enthusiasm
5) respect to friends and people around would increase the life span of a
person. Oh! Rajan, Sathpurusha/virtuous/noble
people would definitely strive hard to achieve the lost glories in a fair
manner, it is their vow too.”
