Sri Mani Rathna Mala – Prashnoththari – Sri Shankaracharya Virachitham

Chapter – 6 – Sri Manirathna Mala – 28 - 32

The disciple speaks “Oh! Bhagavan, kindly enlighten me 1) What’s that very difficult to achieve in this world? Who is unconquerable?”

The preceptor speaks “1) The Sathjanasangam, the association with the Santh, Sadhu, Mahatmas, noble-souls, Sadhguru, Athmavichara, etc. are extremely difficult to achieve, is available only with the grace of the Lord and the piousness earned from the several births. The nearness to the preceptor, selfless service, and worship is considered as highly propitious deed, service to Preceptor is service to Lord Parameshwara. The Preceptor who offered shelter to disciple is considered as the ‘father of the disciple’, inspires the disciple to follow austerities, Shamadhamadhi/Sathyam, Dhaya, Shaucham, Dhama and Shamam, vows, observance of celibacy, etc. to get rid of impurities of Kama, Krodha, Lobha, Moha, Madha, and Mathshcharya, and impart the knowledge of supreme Bhramam/knowledge of self’, indestructible Purusha resides as a soul in the Jeeva, and the destructible Prakrithi/Maya, the inseparable part of Purusha, thereby remove the interest in the worldly matters and bondage, and encourage the ‘Athmavichara’ /Aham Bhramasmi and discussions, ultimately, with the constant meditation and contemplation upon the supreme Lord, the fortunate disciples achieve Vishayathyaga/abandons the interest in material matters, wealth, possession, fame, richness, money, etc. attachment to wife, children, relatives and companion etc.  achieves the serenity of mind, and remain in supreme bliss. 2) The cupid arrows of Lord Kamadeva, lust and desires, yearning for bodily pleasures are unconquerable.”

The disciple speaks “Oh! Bhagavan, 1) who is inferior than the animals? 2) What is that toxic poison that gives out the appearance of nectar? 3) Who are all the enemies disguised as companions?”

The preceptor speaks “ 1) The twice-born who has achieved knowledge in various Shastra, but failed to understand the ‘Athmabodha’/supreme consciousness, the knowledge of ‘self’ is considered as inferior than the animal. 2) The attractive woman gives out the appearance of nectar, but it is impossible to understand the mind and heart of a woman. 3) The attachment to wife, children, companions, relatives, etc. causes constant ruffles, grief and agony, therefore they are considered as enemies disguised in the form of companions.”

The disciple speaks “Oh! Bhagavan, 1) which has the fleeting nature of lightning? 2)Which is the superior form of charity? 3) What are the forbidden acts that should not be committed even if life is in danger? 4) which is the most admirable deed?”

The preceptor speaks “ 1) Youthfulness, wealth, possession, fame, richness,  and life has fleeting nature, like the lightning. The’ Athmavidhya’/Bhramajjanam, destroys the pride in material matters, body, and I consciousness. The Prana/vital air in the body has no assurance, may leave the Jeeva at any moment, hence the intellectuals and wise take shelter in the Athman/Paramathma resides as the soul that has neither birth nor death, free from afflictions, pure, unblemished, and get rid of the impurities, interest in material matters and bondage. 2) The superior form of charity is the wealth and richness used for the welfare of the world and humans, such as the construction of ponds, wells, gardens, shelter homes, etc. The wealth and richness spend on the spiritual and religious rites performed for the welfare of the Universe. 3) The unwarranted and immoral activities, such as stealing the wealth of Vipra, and killing Bhramins, an illicit relationship with the Viprapathni or Gurupapthni, consumption of spirituous drinks, association with the deprived people, wicked, deceitful, Go Hathya, etc. are forbidden deeds. 4) The most admirable deed is the worship of Lord Shiva, /Shivarchana is considered as highly propitious that would remove the impurities in the Jeeva, and thereby destroy the sufferings of worldly existence.”

The disciple speaks “Oh! Bhagavan, 1) Which is the most propitious practice?  2) Which is the most appropriate deed? 3) what’s most untrustworthy?”

The preceptor speaks “ 1) The most propitious practice is Athma Manthan/Athma Chinthan, Thaththva Vichara, contemplation upon the all-pervasive supreme Bhramam resides as a soul in the Jeeva, which has neither birth nor death, pure, unblemished, eternal bliss, changeless, and free from afflictions. Most importantly, pondering over the Prapancha Mithyaththva/destructible nature of Prakrithi/ material matters and bondage, body and I consciousness, the infinite Nama, Roopa, Dhrishya in the Prakrithi has transient nature, are same as the Swapnavastha/dream, and it is short-living. 2) The worship of Lord Murari, and selfless service to preceptors, Vipra, Go, Santh, Mahathma, and Sadhus, Swadhyaya, performance of austerities, vow, celibacy, Varnna and Ashrama Dharma, religious and spiritual rite that would please the supreme Lord, and these are the most appropriate deed to practice the Jeeva who yearns to achieve liberation from the worldly existence. 3) The most unreliable object is Bhavabdhi/ the ocean like worldly existence. It is extremely rare to achieve the birth of human, that too after earning piousness of several births, therefore it should not go futile without the knowledge of Paramarththa Thaththva/knowledge of self/Paramathma Parambhramam. The Jeeva who has achieved the knowledge of Paramarththa safely cross the unfathomable ocean of worldly existence, and gets liberated from the vicious cycles of rebirth.”
