176 – Sri Vinaya Patrika – The significance of ‘Shravanam’/listening to the
glorious legends of Lord Sri Hari

Tulsidas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Tongue, why don’t you sing in praise of Lord Sri
Ramachandra? Why are you making your life worthless by singing the fault of
others? Oh! Jeeva, you have achieved the rarest birth as a human, why don’t you
practice Ramanama on that beautiful Mukharoopi shrine? You are living nearer to the nectar from the
Chandhrama like the compassionate grace of Lord Ramachandra, but chasing after
the Mrigathrishnaroopi Samsara? Why don’t you taste the nectar-like Sri
Ramanama? The material welfare, richness, wealth, money, fame, attachment to
wife, children, companion, relatives, and bodily pleasures are like the Kaliyugaroopi
Kumudhini/lotus flower, it has momentary life, either it gets withered or back
to bud during the hours of dusk. Oh! Tongue, abandon the interest in Vishyavisha/toxic
poison like the worldly matters, it cannot provide the serenity of mind or
happiness, hence sing in praise of Lord Sri Hari, it would remove the sins of
the ears accumulated by listening to the unwanted and ill-words about others. Oh!
Jeeva, the Bhagavat Katha Shravana removes the sins accumulated by the ears which
were polluted by listening to unwarranted matters. Oh! Jeeva, listen to me
carefully, construct a magnificent garland with the Budhdhiroopi Suvarna/pure
intellect and Yukthiroopi gems/wisdom, and adore on the lotus feet of Suryakula Thilaka Sri Ramachandra who is the
protector of Jeeva taken shelter at his lotus feet, contemplate and meditate
upon Lord Raghunath with intense devotion and faith, sing in praise of his
endless virtues. Oh! Jeeva, abandon the interest in worldly matters, Ahamkara,
Mamakara, Kama, Krodha, Lobha, Moha, Madha, Mathshcharya, attachment to the
material matters, possession, wealth, money, richness, fame, children, wife,
companion and relatives, it has impermanent nature would push you in extreme
grief and agony in their absence, hence leave interest in worldly matters and
sing in praise of Lord Sri Hari with pure devotion and listen to his glorious
myths. Oh! Tulsi, it would make you safely cross the unfathomable ocean of
Samsara, and Samsara Chakra/Garbhavasa Dhukham, and it would bring ‘pure fame’
in the three worlds.”
