Sri Mahakala Sahasranama is
sacred verses praising the glories of Lord Mahakaleshvara, one of the 12
Jyothirlinga Kshethra located in Avanthi/Ujjain, these thousands of sacred
names of Lord Mahalakala was narrated by Lord Krishna to his closest associate
Sudhama while they were under the tutelage of Maharishi Sandheepani, and Lord
Krishna concludes with the abundance of the meritorious rewards attainable
through the recitation of Sri Mahakala Sahasranama.
I shall prostrate before supreme Lord
Mahadeva who is personified as Mahakala, he is Lord of Lords, he is the
provider of abundance of boons to worshiper, he is the annihilator of demons,
he is Dhineshvara/Lord of Surya/day, he is compassionate, he disperse the fruit
of Karma, he works for the welfare of the deities and protects them, he is Dhivaspathi/Lord Surya, he represents
Dhamodhara, he is attired in minimum clothes, he bathe in milk and very fond of
butter milk, he represents Devaraja/Lord Indra, he is Lord of Surya/sky/heaven,
he is supreme deity, he is beloved of all deities, he is Devadeva, he
symbolizes charity, he is fond of Dhoorvadhala, he is eternal , he is attired
all directions/sky as clothes, he is embodied as Earth, he is Digambara who is
the destroyer of poverty of worshiper, he is closest companion of distressed
people, he is difficult to be propitiated, he destroys perils and wicked
people, he is son in law of Dhakshaprajapthi, he crushed the pride of
Dhakshaprajapathi and inflicted sorrow, he is supreme Lord, he eradicates pairs
of sorrows, he is pure and irresistible, he is Dhurdhareshvara/unstoppable, he
represents charity and provider of abundance boons, he is Dhivakara who is
divine and illuminates the whole Universe with his radiance, he destroys
deceitfulness, he is Dhakshajapathi/ Lord of Durga, he is Dheepthiman who has
supreme brilliance, he is wielded in
bow, he carries bow and arrows, he is valorous, he symbolizes grains, and he is
the provider of abundance of grains to worshiper, he symbolizes righteousness,
he is supreme Lord embodied as Dharma, he is auspicious, he establishes the law
and order, he strictly follows righteousness, he is Dhaneshvara/Lord of wealth
and provider of wealth to worshiper, he is Dhoorjadi who showers prosperity on unfortunate, he is pious and he
symbolizes wealth, he symbolizes Dharmaraja/Lord of righteousness, he is
Dhanadhara/Lord of wealth, he is Dharadhara/embodied as Earth and mountains, he
is the Lord of Dhara/Dharapathi, he is profound in Dhanurvidhya/art of archery,
he is divine smeared in dust particles, he represents bow and he is wielded in
bow and arrow, he is consort of Dhara/Dharanatha, he is the commander of
Earth/Dharadheesha, he symbolizes wealth, he is the provider of abundance of
wealth to worshiper, he symbolizes righteousness, he reinstates and protects
the righteousness on Earth, he is Dhanakara/Lord of wealth and provider of
wealth, he represents Narmada who causes immense bliss, he originated from the
sacred river Narmada, he is the Lord of happiness and pleasure/Narmadhesha, he
is Nripeshvara who is Lord of Kings.
