Sri Mahakala Sahasranama is
sacred verses praising the glories of Lord Mahakaleshvara, one of the 12
Jyothirlinga Kshethra located in Avanthi/Ujjain, these thousands of sacred
names of Lord Mahalakala was narrated by Lord Krishna to his closest associate
Sudhama while they were under the tutelage of Maharishi Sandheepani, and Lord
Krishna concludes with the abundance of the meritorious rewards attainable through
the recitation of Sri Mahakala Sahasranama.
I shall prostrate before supreme Lord
Mahadeva who is personified as Mahakala, he is decked in serpents all over his
body, he is the Lord of realms of serpents, he is decked in serpent as jewels,
he is decorated with the serpent as Yajjopaveetha/sacred thread across the
chest, he is the Lord of serpents, he is the protector of serpents, he is worshiped by the serpents, he is
Naravara/flawless, he is decked in
marvelous anklets, he is Chandeshvara, he is Nagadhipa/commander of serpents, he is beloved of blue waters of sacred Ganga on his matted
hair locks, he is the Lord of sacred Ganga, he is Prithukesha/who represents
ancestors and Prayagesha/Lord of sacred land of Prayaga as well, he is
Paththanesha/Lord of sacred cities and he is Parashara/destroys sins of the
worshiper as well, he is Pushpadhantheshvara, he represents morality, he is
Pingaleshvara/fire/golden colored, he represents ancestors, he is the Lord of
spirits, he is Pannagesha/Lord of serpents, he is Pashupathishvara/Lord of
animals, he is beloved of all, he is worshiped by Parvathi, he symbolizes
Prana/soul, he is the Lord of Prana, he is the destroyer of sins of worshiper,
he is beloved consort of Parvathi, he dwells as Prana in living beings, he
dwells as Prana, he is flawless who represents sacred scriptures, he symbolizes
passion, he is omniscient, he is the Lord of Goddess Parvathi, he symbolizes
sacred rivers and he has the luster of blue lotus flower, he is the Lord of
sacred rivers, he is the provider of virtuous offspring and piousness to

he consumes unique kind of meal, he has the luster of crystals, he is the
provider of fruits of auspicious deeds,
he is the Lord of Bhadhri/full moon, he is powerful, he consumes plentiful, he
is venerated by Balakhilyas, he has child like form, he represents Bhramam, he
is worshiped by Bhramins who follow strict practices in acquiring knowledge of Veda
and supreme Bhramam, he represents Bhramin and
Lord Bhrama, he is supreme Bhramam, he is the knower of Bhramam, he is
beloved of Bhramins, he is embodied as supreme Bhramam, he is the protector of
Bhramins, he is personified as supreme Bhramam, he is the Lord of Bhrama, he is
delightful in the presence of Bhramins, he destroys the wicked who commit
Bhramahathya/killing of Bhramin, he is Bhrama who is worshiped by Bhramins, he
is the Lord of spirit, he is the protector of spirit, he is smeared in sacred
ashes all over his body, he has colossal form and he is valorous as well, he
destroys the worldly bondage of worshiper, he is Bhairava who destroys fears in
the worshiper, he is gracious, he is supreme Lord who is the source of
Universe, he is the Lord of the Universe, he represents highest peaks, he
symbolizes prosperity, he is Lord of expressiveness, he is Bhujangesha and
Bhaskara as well, he is personified as Bhindhipala/expert in archery/catapult,
he dwells as Prana in living beings, he destroys fear, he is Bhanu/Lord Surya,
he promotes the welfare of Universe and its living beings, he is the provider
of liberation from repeated births. The
