Maha Mrithyunjjaya Sthothram – Sri Markandeya Puranam - Lyrics & meaning

Sri Maha Mrithyunjjaya Sthothram is highly propitious hymn was composed by Markandeya Rishi, it has Anushtup as Chandhass, presiding deity is Mrithyunjjaya, Gauri as Shakthi, it is recited to get freed from all the miseries and sorrows, untimely and accidental death, and attain all kinds of auspiciousness and wealth.


I shall meditate upon Mrithunjjaya who has won over death, he is Pashupathi who is Lord of living beings, he entices the whole Universe with his mesmerizing beauty, he has Chandhra, Surya and Agni as three eyes, he has pleasing smile on his face, he hold lotus flower, auspicious Abhaya and Varadha Mudhra, he holds baby antelope, he has the luster of snow and crores of moon, he is adorned in various ornaments, I shall prostrate before Lord  Rudra, he is Pashupathi who is the protector of living beings, he is firm, he has bluish throat and he is the consort of Goddess of Uma, hence Lord of Death could do nothing to me.  I shall prostrate before Lord Neelakanda who has bluish throat, he symbolizes Kala/time, he is beyond Kala, he crushed the pride of Lord Yama, and hence Lord of Death could do nothing to me. I shall prostrate before Lord Neelakanda who has bluish throat, he has unique eyes, he is pure, he is the provider of liberation from repeated births, and hence Lord of Death could do nothing to me.  I shall prostrate before Devadeva who is Lord of Lords, he is Jagannatha who is the Lord of Universe, he is Lord of deities, he is mounted on celestial vehicle bull, and hence Lord of Death could do nothing to me.  I shall prostrate before mighty Lord who is serene, he has four powerful hands, he has attractive matted hair locks, and hence Lord of Death could do nothing to me. I shall prostrate before supreme Lord who is smeared in sacred ashes from the funeral pyre, he is adorned in venomous serpents as ornaments all over the body, and hence Lord of Death could do nothing to me.  I shall prostrate before supreme Lord who is not perceivable, he is beyond human intellect, he is serene, he is adorned in Akshamala/prayer beads/Rudraksha, he eradicates sins of the worshiper, and hence Lord of Death could do nothing to me.  I shall prostrate before supreme Lord  who symbolizes eternal bliss, he is beyond human intellect, he is eternal, he is the provider of pieties, hence Lord of Death could do nothing to me.   I shall prostrate before supreme Lord who has allocated half of the body to his consort Goddess Parvathi/Ardhanareeshvara, he is beloved of Goddess Sri Parvathi, and hence Lord of Death could do nothing to me.  I shall prostrate before supreme Lord Shiva who is the cause for deluge at the end of Yuga, he is the cause of preservation of Universe and its living beings, he is primordial, and hence Lord of Death could do nothing to me.  I shall prostrate befor supreme Lord Shiva whose matted hair locks are spreaded all over the sky, he has unique eyes, he is decked in cresent moon on matted hair locks, hence Lord of Death could do nothing to me.  I shall prostrate before supreme Lord Shiva who is adorned in sacred Ganga and crescent moon on matted hair locks, he is Shankara who is auspicious, he is wielded in powerful trident, and hence Lord of Death could do nothing to me.  I shall prostrate before supreme Lord Shiva who does not require protector or any support system, he is eternal bliss, he is the provider of Moksha, and hence Lord of Death could do nothing to me.  I shall prostrate before supreme Lord Shiva who is the provider of heaven as well as fruits of Karma, he is the cause of creation, preservation and destruction at the end of Yuga, and hence Lord of Death could do nothing to me.  I shall prostrate before supreme Lord Shiva and I shall earnestly pray for long life with good health and abundance of pieties, hence Lord of Death could do nothing to me.  I shall prostrate before supreme Lord Shiva who is Shivesha, Mahadeva, Vamadeva, and Sadhashiva as well, hence Lord of Death could do nothing to me.  I shall prostrate before supreme Lord Shiva who is the cause for creation, preservation, and destruction, he is Universal preceptor, and hence Lord of Death could do nothing to me.

The above are the glorious verses composed by Sage Markandeya, whoever reads or listens to it in the sanctum of Lord Shiva would be relieved from fear of death and fears of fire accidents and theieves, whoever reads for hundred of times would be freed from miseries and perils, whoever reads the above verse following strict austerities would attain all kinds of siddhis, Oh! Mrithyunjjaya who has won over death, Oh! Mahadeva who is mighty Lord, I shall surrender at your lotus feet, kindly protect us, kindly eradicate repeated births and deaths, illnesses and afflictions caused by worldly bondage, Oh! Mrida, kindly bless us with intense devotion and supreme intellect, Devesha who has three eyes should be worshiped in the above manner. I shall prostrate before supreme Lord Shiva who is Samba, he is Hara who eradicates sins of the worshiper, he is Paramathma, I shall prostrate before supreme Lord who symbolizes Yogi and he is the Lord of Yogi, and I shall earnestly pray to eradicate our miseries and sorrows.
