Sri Sanath Sujatheeyam – Sri Mahabharath – Sri Shankarabhashyam

Chapter – 4 –  Bhashyam – 3 - Immortality is achieved by the performance of righteous deeds

Sage Sanathkumara who is the Manasaputhra of Lord Bhrama was reverentially greeted by Vidura. Sanathakumara is supreme Bhramam/Hiranyagarbha/ and eternal, Sanathkumara was born from the mind of that eternal Bhramam is the essence of Gnana and Vairagya. Dhritarashtra who was already worn out of interest in worldly matters and attachment to his sons expressed his anxiousness to know about that Poornna/flawless, Anandha/supreme bliss, Adhvatheeya/lack of duality, Bhramam resides as a soul in Jeeva. Dhritarashtra makes an attempt to regain the serenity of mind which was completely lost by Avidhya/ignorance, with the knowledge of Bhramavidhya.

Dhritarashtra speaks “Oh! Sanathsujatha, Oh! Bhagavan, you have affirmed that the Athman/soul has no death or birth, changeless, eternal, free from afflictions, then why did Shruthi say that the Deva and Asura observed celibacy to achieve that Amarathva/immortality? Kindly explain which one is the truth.”

Dhritarashtra came to know from Vidura that Sanathsujatha's advice to his disciple that the ‘Athman’ is indestructible. The deities, Asuras, Indra and Virochana, and demons observed chastity to attain ‘Amrithyu’/immortality {Mrithyo: Abhava: Amrithyu: }, the absence of Mrithyu is Amrithyu, the Chandhokya Upanishads state that the deities and demons have observed chastity and lived with their preceptor, to achieve Amarathvam/immortality. Indra and Virochana observed chastity for thirty-two years and served Prajapathi. Maghava and Indra observed chastity for a hundred and one years and served Prajapathi.  If there is no Mrithyu/death for Athman, why the Deva and Asura did observe penance to achieve that Amarathva/immortality? Oh! Sanathsujatha, if the Athman has no death or birth there is no need to observe penance for Amrithyu, then why did the Mrithyu and Amrithyu is stated in the Upanishad, which is the truth? Oh! Sanathsujatha, kindly enlighten me with the truth.  Sanathkumara replies “ Oh! Rajan, the Amarathva is achieved through righteous deeds; the Athman has no death or birth. Oh! Rajan, I shall explain about the concept of Mrithyu and Amrithyu in detail, listen to me carefully.”
