Sri Subramanya Shodashanama Sthothram by Sage Agasthya – Sri Shankara Samhitha - Lyrics and meanings

The sixteen sacred names of Lord Subramanya is composed by Rishi Agasthya, it has Anushtup as Chandhass, presiding deity is Lord Subramanya, it is recited to attain all that desired by the worshiper.


 I shall meditate upon Lord Subramanya  who is six faced,  he is mounted on celestial vehicle peacock, he has three eyes, he is decked in various precious ornaments, he is wielded in powerful weapon Shakthi/spear, Vajram, Asi, Thrishoolam/trident, Gedam, bow, wheel, Pasham/noose, Kukkudam/rooster, Angusham, and one hand in Abhayahastha posture.  I shall always meditate upon Lord Subramanya who is omnipresent and omniscient, the following are the Shodashanama praising the splendor of Lord Subramanya in order to fulfil all the desires of the worshiper, firstly Gnanashakthyathma who symbolizes knowledge and valor, secondly  Skandha who has powerful shoulders, thirdly Agnibhoo who is initiated from Agni, fourthly Bahuleya who is initiated from Agni, carried by sacred Ganga and brought up young maidens of Krithika, fifthly  Gangeya who is the son of Ganga, sixthly Sharavanothbhava who is born in the reed, seventhly  Karthikeya who is the son of young maidens of Karthika, eighthly  Kumara who is always youthful, ninthly  Shanmukha who has six faces, tenthly Kukkuda Dhvaja who carries majestic flag that has the symbol of rooster, eleventhly  Shakthidhara who is wielded in powerful spear Shakthi, twelvethly Guha who resides in the caves, thirteenth  is Bhramachari who strictly follows austerities and penance, fourteenth is Shanmathura who is brought up by six mothers of Krithika, fifteenth is  Kraunchabhith who crushed the pride of mount Krauncha, sixteenth is  Shikhivahana who is mounted on celestial vehicle peacock, the above are the sixteen sacred names of Lord Subramanya should be recited with intense devotion and faith, it is auspicious to recite while performing marriage, hours of difficulties while travelling and during the hours of extreme difficulties.  Worshiper who seek for supreme knowledge would attain poetic skills and knowledge in scriptures, bride groom who is in search of virtuous companion as wedded wife would attain the same, worshiper who seek success in deeds would attain the same, childless couple who yearn for offspring would attain virtuous offspring, worshiper who desires for wealth would attain the same, it provides long life, good health, happiness, wealth, and abundance of grains to worshiper.
