Sri Surdas Maharaj – Sri Sur – Vinaya – Pathrika – The unconquerable Maya/illusion

Chapter – 66 -  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – The unconquerable Maya/illusion

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Madhav, your Maya/illusion is so powerful, kindly stop the Mayaroopi cow of yours, it chasing me through the dirty as well as good paths, she is driving me insane, chasing me day and night. I am not getting satisfied with the material pleasure or physical pleasure; hence I remain hungry always, my desire is endless, I have already cut off the Vedaroopi tree that represents beliefs, culture, rites, virtues, etc. I have no culture, virtues, or values inherited in me because I have completely lost knowledge of the Veda and scriptures. Oh! Prabho, even after reading eighteen Puranas/Upapuranas, etc. like eighteen vessels of water did not quench my thirst, Oh! Prabho, I have not taken pleasure in the Shatshasthras/six Shastras, alas! I did not get appeased of six types of tastes, Oh! Prabho, I have performed various sinful deeds by word, action, and thought, I cannot describe them in words. Oh! Prabho, I have taken several births in air, sky, water, and Earth, and in various Yonis/womb, I have taken immense pleasure in infinite Nama, Roopa, Rasa, Sparsha, Shabdha, and Gandha, still, my thirst has not removed.  The Thamogunaroopi black colored Bison/Thamasik have beautiful horn/Sathvik, red eyes/Rajasik, gets attracted to all, but it is capable to create hollow on the fourteen worlds with its horn. Oh! Prabho, your Maya is unconquerable, the whole Universe and its living and non-living things are under the clutches of your Maya. Oh! Prabho, your Thrigunamayi Maya has taken complete control of the Jeeva, it is merciless, she does not even leave the deities, and King Bali, she has taken control of the Universe and its living and non-living things forcefully, the illustrious Sages, Rishis, could not even protect themselves from your powerful Maya, Oh! Prabho, Oh! Kripanidhan I am helpless, born blind by birth, how can I win over your Maya/illusion?”

Sri Surdas Maharaj – Sri Sur – Vinaya – Pathrika – Jeevas/humans are fireflies

Chapter – 65 -  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – Jeevas/humans are  fireflies

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Prabho, the humans and fireflies that get attracted to fire and burn into ashes have no difference from one another, the humans after achieving the rarest birth chase after material matters, possession, richness, wealth, money, fame, children, wife, companion and relatives, etc., and constantly undergo three kinds of grief/ aging, illnesses, fear of death, separation from beloved people, loss or theft of wealth, loss of fame, unexpected and accidental deaths, etc. The unfortunates drenched in worldly matters, hurl themselves into the cycles of repeated births and undergo endless sufferings. The Bhramajjyani and noble souls/Mahathma describe the worldly existence/Samsara as a dark and bottomless well, whoever soaked in physical and material welfare is shoved into this deep well and undergoes sufferings of worldly existence continuously. The ignorant, arrogant, and wicked people drenched in desire, lust, ego, anger, pride, and jealousy of Rajasik and Thamasik nature constantly burn in the flame of suffering because the Thamasik and Rajasik nature cannot bring well-being or happiness. There are several deeds that are discouraged and encouraged by the scriptures and sacred texts, unfortunately, people follow several beliefs and rites of their own and spend their whole life performing deeds day and night expecting fruitful results, alas! none of them would provide its results due to the impurities in the Kali era. Oh! Ignorant ones, the Samsara/worldly existence is a vast ocean, you cannot create a ferry of your own choice adopting various techniques/values and beliefs/ and cross it, these ferries cannot take you to the destination. Oh! Mortals, abandon the interest in worldly matters of infinite names, appearance, sounds, touch, passion, and smell, and engage in singing the praise of Lord Sri Krishnachandra/Namasankeerthan/Namasmaran it is the only one that can liberate you from the sufferings and grief of worldly existence and repeated births in this Kali era.”

Chapter – 64 -  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – The practice of devotion to get rid of Thapathraya/three kinds of grief

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Prabho, you symbolize the three attributes of Rajasik, Swathik, and Thamasik. The Rajasik natured arrogance and ignorance did not even leave the mighty demons on the Earth, hence Hiranyakashipu, Hiranyaksha, Ravana, and Kumbakarnna, brought mass annihilation to their entire clan. Oh! Prabho, the demons like Keshi, Kamsa, and Chanoora, were extremely haughty, their ill fate brought miserable death to them and their ashes were merged in the sacred waters of the Yamuna. Oh! Prabho, Shishupala who was got killed for his uncontrollable arrogance in the Rajasuya Yajja arena of King Yudhishtira, his soul effortlessly attained the lotus feet of Lord Krishna, while everyone was watching, a divine light from his body merged at the lotus feet of Krishna. Oh! Prabho, you have crushed the pride of deities, even Lord Bhrama, Lord Shankara, Lord Indra, and deities had to dance to the tune of your unconquerable Maya. Oh! Prabho, whoever taken shelter at your lotus feet would get rid of impurities of Ahamkara, Mamakara, lust, ego, jealousy, desire, and pride, they would easily abandon the interest in worldly matters of three kinds of grief/Thapathraya, and remain in supreme bliss.”

Chapter – 63 -  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – The practice of worship and meditation to get rid of sufferings of worldly existence and repeated births

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Prabho, your unconquerable Maya/illusion is the sinner, it is burning me alive. It drives me insane to leave the service of Lord Sri Vaikundanatha/Sri Hari, Lakshmipathi, and run after the fleeting natured possession, wealth, money, richness, fame, children, wife, companion, relatives, etc. Your Maya forcing me to worship the ill-fated, inauspicious people, thereby accumulated my Thapathraya/three kinds of grief. Oh! Prabho, your Maya compels me to take alms from the wicked and arrogant people swollen with pride, ego, jealousy, anger, lust, and desire, it forces me to listen to inauspicious comments from them. Oh! Prabho, I have not practiced worship or meditation at the lotus feet of Lord Sri Hari, or sing in praise of his glories, or I did not observe charity, vows, non-violence, celibacy, self-control, truthfulness, Shama, Dhama, Astheya, Arajjavam, Swadhyaya, etc. or I did not get rid of impurities of mind Kama, Krodha, Lobha, Moha, Madha, Mathshcharya, Ahamkara, and Mamakara, I have been chasing after the worldly matters of fleeting nature, and constantly pushed myself into grief and agonies, I did not utilize my life for the worship of Lord Shyamasundhar, hence it's futile to speak about my sufferings. Oh! Prabho, it is impossible to conduct austerities, Shamadhamadhis/practice of vows, celibacy, non-violence, truthfulness, devotion, and meditation, etc. or achieve knowledge of self/Paramarththa Thaththva/Bhramajyanam without your grace. Oh! Prabho, you are the source of eternal bliss, hence the Jeeva surrendered at your lotus feet would remain freed from Thapathraya, and the cycles of repeated births.”

Chapter – 62 -  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – The practice of devotion to protect the soul from three kinds of grief

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Hari, how many days, and Yugas I have spent without the practice of devotion and worship at your lotus feet, I have wasted my entire life span getting attached to infinite worldly matters and thereby constantly hurling myself into three kinds of grief. Oh! Prabho, I do not know how many births I have wasted taking pleasure in insulting others, back-stabbing, criticizing, cheating, hurting others by words, mind, and deeds. Oh! Prabho, I do not know how many births I have cheated people camouflaging as a saintly person. Oh! Prabho, I do not know how many births I have wasted in the association of Vishayijeevi/people who are drenched in worldly matters of possession, wealth, money, richness, fame, children, wife, relatives, companion, etc. ‘Time’ is the most powerful element, even Lord Bhrama, the creator of Universe and its living and non-living things are bound by the ‘Time’, the whole Universe is under the clutches of ‘Time’. Oh! Prabho, what will happen to a person like me who does not follow any of the righteous deeds? I can envision the dreadful state of a person who is dull-minded, ignorant, arrogant, and wicked like me, who take immense pleasure in material matters. Oh! Mortals, whoever chase after material matters and physical pleasure cannot achieve the fruitfulness of life on the Earth as well as the afterlife, hence practice the worship of Lord Sri Hari, meditation, and contemplation at the lotus feet of Supreme Lord Sri Hari is the ultimate asylum, that would protect the souls from the sufferings and grief of worldly matters, eventually from the repeated births as well.”

Chapter – 61 -  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – The Universe and its living and non-living things are bound by Death/Time/Mrithyu

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Prabho, I have spent most of my life wandering here and there, getting attached to the worldly matters of infinite names, appearances, passion, smell, and sounds, I have been completely drenched in your powerful Maya/illusion, and I have lost the two eyes of wisdom, and knowledge. Oh! Prabho, my mother had to suffer hellish torture while I was in her womb, after birth I had to go through the endless sufferings of worldly matters. Oh! Prabho,  Oh! Thribhuvanapathi,/Lord of three worlds, my mother passed away while giving birth to me, hence she has protected herself from further sufferings of Samsara. Oh! Prabho, I haven’t practiced devotion or worship at the lotus feet of Lord Sri Hari, I have not listened to the glorious legends of Srimad Bhagavath, I was completely soaked in worldly matters such as possession, fame, richness, money, wealth, children, relatives, companion, etc. of fleeting nature, thereby constantly undergone three types of grief/Thapathraya 1) grief caused by aging, illnesses, fear of death, and separation from beloved ones 2) grief caused by the increased attachment to possession, richness, fame, wealth, money, wife, children, companion, relatives, etc 3) grief caused by the natural calamities, earthquake, famine, drought, flood, wildfire, epidemic, etc. Oh! Mortals, Prakrithi/Universe, and its living and non-living things are destructible, none can escape from the clutches of Mrithyu/death/Time, the renounced souls/liberated souls/Bhramajjyani who has the knowledge of absolute truth/Paramarththa Thaththva is the only one escape from the constant sufferings and grief of worldly existence and repeated births.”

Chapter – 60 -  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – The destructible nature of material pleasure/possession, fame, richness, wealth, children, wife, companion, relatives, money, etc.

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Prabho, most of my life have wasted chasing after the infinite Nama/names, Roopa/appearances, Rasa/passion, Sparsha/touch, and smell/Gandha. I haven’t practiced devotion or worship of Lord Sri Hari, or sing in praise of the endless glorious legends of the Lord. Did I achieve anything material well-being after following your unconquerable Maya? No, absolutely not, in both the ways I have proven myself a loser. Oh! Prabho, I haven’t been successful in achieving the supreme Knowledge/Paramarththa Thatthva by Swadhyaya, that is ‘All the material things/Prakrithi is destructible nature, and the all-pervasive Bhamam resides as a soul in the Jeeva is indestructible/Purusha’ or I did not practice various austerities, vows, celibacy, non-violence, charity, self-c0ntrol, meditation, Pranayama, kindness truthfulness, Astheya, Arjjavam, Dhamam, Shamam, etc. or I did not get rid of the impurities of mind such as lust, desire, ego, anger, pride, jealousy, ignorance, and arrogance or I did not achieve serenity of mind or fruitfulness of birth or welfare of afterlife. Alas! did I achieve any material pleasures? Oh! Prabho, I have wasted my life running after the material pleasure of fleeting nature, such as possession, fame, wealth, money, richness, children, wife, companion, relatives, and thrown myself into Thapathrya/three kinds of grief, like the Madhumakki/honey bee that wander all around the forest to collect honey from the flowers and deposit into the hives, one fine day, the hunter would take away all that honey stored, pushing the bees into deep distress. Oh! Prabho, your Maya is like that hunter who steal away the beehive, it has manipulated my intellect, pushed me into the darkness of ignorance, and has stolen my life. Oh! Prabho, you have protected me from the Pakhand/ untrustworthy, interest in worldly matters/Samsara, and my interest in wealth, money, richness, fame, children, wife, relatives, and companions like fleeting natured worldly pleasures, now I have developed a pure love to that supreme Lord Sri Hari, who resides as a soul in the Jeeva, eventually, I have lost interest in worldly matters.”

Chapter – 59 -  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – The significance of devotion

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Prabho, your unconquerable Maya/illusion, has completely taken over my intellect, I am not in a position to think good and bad, Oh! Karunamaya/ocean of mercy, that was the reason I have completely abandoned the practice of devotion and worship of you and chased after the material pleasures such as possession, wealth, money, richness, fame, children, wife, companion, relatives, etc. I have completely soaked in lust, desire, ego, pride, anger, jealousy, hence I have lost peace of mind, I haven’t practiced devotion or worship of Lord Sri Hari, or I haven’t performed any righteous deeds, I have been hurling into different wombs of animals, birds, reptiles, etc. like the deer with the marvelous Kasthuri/fragrant substance stored on its navel, does not know the worth of it, hence it wanders all around chasing for fragrances. Oh! Prabho, I have been like that Kasthuri deer, did not realize the Paramarththa Thaththva/the absolute truth, and the all-pervasive supreme Bhramam resides as a soul in me which is changeless, eternal bliss, pure, free from dualities, it has neither birth nor death. Oh! Prabho, I did not meditate or complete upon the Sacchidhanandha Swaroopa Paramathma Parambhramam resides as the soul which is eternal bliss, instead, I was chasing after material pleasures/Mrigathrishna running after the destructible nature of the Prakrithi of infinite names, sounds, appearances, smell, touch, and passion. Oh! Prabho, when were your devotees have undergone miseries and grief of worldly existence? Oh! Prabho, you have always saved your promise to protect the distressed souls who have taken shelter at your lotus feet, and you haven’t made any delay to reach out to their cries.”

Chapter – 58 -  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – Swadhyaya/The practice of reciting the sacred text, and Veda to get rid of the darkness of ignorance

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Thrithapahari/destroyer of three kinds of grief of Adhidheivik, Adhibhauthik, and Adhyathmik, why do the distressed soul conduct in search for you and surrender at your lotus feet? Oh! Prabho, kindly listen to me, I have taken several births, and I have been wandering on the air, water, and Earth by taking births in different wombs. Oh! Prabho, I am helpless, I am an orphan, I am blind by birth, how can I take asylum in the Vedaroopi/the supreme Bhramam symbolizes Veda and Vedanga?, hence I did not learn Veda or scriptures or any other sacred texts which is the source of intellect and supreme wisdom, therefore I have forced myself to commit various sins, leaving the Dharmic deeds. Oh! Prabho, there is no one to protect me other than you, who would shower compassionate grace upon me? Oh! Prabho, I have no Sathbudhdhi/supreme knowledge or Sathsang/association with the noble souls, Santh, Mahathma, who symbolizes walking stick to guide me to the path of righteousness. Oh! Prabho, all I am seeing is your powerful Maya engulfed in the Universe, like the vast ocean in the ten directions, how did I save myself from your unconquerable Maya/illusion?  And interest in infinite sounds, touch, smell, passion, etc.? Oh! Prabho, I am helpless and terrified, stuck in the middle of the ocean of worldly existence, I am continuously calling out for help, I haven’t earned any pieties in my previous births to save me. Oh! Shyamsundhar, how did I get relieved from the darkness of ignorance? Oh! Prabho, the impurities of mind such as ignorance, arrogance, lust, desire, anger, ego, jealousy, pride won’t leave me in the absence of the light from the sparkling toenails from your lotus feet.”

Chapter – 57 -  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – Illusion results in excessive interest in worldly matters

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Prabho, I have sold out myself to your powerful Maya/illusion, I am feeling suffocated, like the cow tied to the noose, and completely restricted to move. Oh! Prabho, Oh! Sripathi/consort of Goddess Sri Mahalakshmi, I haven’t practiced devotion at your lotus feet, or not engaged in the worship of you, or in singing in praise of you. Oh! Prabho, I have swollen with pride, arrogance, lust, desire, anger, ego, jealousy, I have completely forgotten the purpose of my birth, and chasing after the material pleasures. Oh! Prabho, due to my increased interest in worldly matters, infinite Shabdha/sounds, Sparsha/touch, Rasa/passion, Roopa/appearances, and Gandha/smells, I have become arrogant, thereby committed various sins. Oh! Prabho, I am ignorant, I haven’t yet satisfied with the pleasures in worldly matters, like the person who has taken great pleasure in excessive sleep, due to my ignorance I have hurled myself into the utter darkness of ignorance, forgotten the absolute truth/Paramaraththa Thaththva, or did not realize the all-pervasive supreme Bhramam resides as a soul in me. Oh! Prabho, I am blind by birth, I have only one eye/Gnanachakshu/eye of wisdom, that too got manipulated by your powerful Maya.”

Chapter – 56 -  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – The increased interest in worldly matters & repeated cycles of birth and death

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Madhava, Oh! Prabho, your Maya has taken complete control over me, like the fireflies that get attracted to the fire, I have drenched in your Maya without any forethought, hence I have lost control of my senses, multiplied interest in worldly matters, lust, anger, desire, pride, ego, and jealousy. A home symbolizes lightened earthen lamp, wealth represents oil in it, women in the families are the wick in it, and the offspring and grandchildren are the flames in it. Oh! Prabho, I am ignorant, I did not understand the meaning of it, I have chased after the material welfare and pleasures, and completely drenched in it. I have got stuck in the net of worldly matters of fleeting nature like the parrot gets stuck inside the net spread by the hunter. Oh! Prabho, I am helpless, I have been tied to worldly matters forcibly, without any interest in it. Oh! Prabho, I am an ignorant one, I do not know gain or loss of interest in worldly matters, I have soaked in it completely and suffering from Thapathraya/three kinds of grief, 1)Adhyathmik – grief caused by aging, illnesses, separation from beloved ones, fear of death, etc. 2) Adhidheivik – grief caused by natural calamities, epidemic, flood, drought, famine, woodfire, earthquake, etc. 3) Adhibhauthik – grief caused by the attachment in worldly matters such as possession, wealth, money, richness, fame, children, wife, relatives, companions, etc. Oh! Prabho, I am an ignorant one, without the knowledge of Paramarththa Thaththva/absolute truth, Prakrithi/destructible nature of worldly matters and indestructible nature of soul/Purusha resides as a soul in the Jeeva, driven myself afar from the practice of devotion and worship of supreme Lord Sri Hari, thereby I have thrown myself into repeated births and taken several births in the womb of animals, reptiles, ugly creatures, birds, etc. Oh! Shyamsundhar, whoever surrendered at your lotus feet could not be thrown into the repeated births, how did it happen?”

Chapter – 54 -  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – Maya/illusion and its effects on the intellect

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Hari, your Maya is so powerful, I can’t remain calm, I have lost peace of mind, it is creating chaos in my intellect, hence I am not in a position to conduct worship at your lotus feet, or meditate or contemplate upon you. Oh! Prabho, whenever I get an opportunity to be with the noble souls, Santh, Mahathma, my mind gets serene for a while, like an elephant that takes bath elaborately in the pond, gets soaked in the sand immediately after the bath. Oh! Prabho, soon after leaving the association of Mahatmas, my mind gets back to impure thoughts. Oh! Prabho, I have exhausted wearing the costumes of a nobleman and stealing the wealth of others, like the entertainer makes money out of his/her gimmicks. Oh! Prabho, my mind keeps driving me into worldly matters, and it adopts various techniques to find pleasures in the infinite Shabda/sounds, Sparsha/touch, Rasa/passion, Roopa/appearances, and Gandha/smells. Oh! Prabho, my mind does not allow me to conduct meditation and worship of you, and it is not even thinking about the welfare of the afterlife on Earth. Oh! Prabho, your powerful Maya makes me drive away from you, and makes me completely forget the Sacchidhanandhaswaroopa Paramathma Parambhramam resides as a soul in me.”

Sri Surdas Maharaj – Sri Sur – Vinaya – Pathrika – The nature of Maya/illusion/something which does not exist in real

Chapter – 53 -  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – The nature of Maya/illusion/something which does not exist in real

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Gopal, your Maya is extremely powerful, it has taken complete control over the Universe and its living and non-living things. Your Maya is like the cunning woman who persuades the men with her lovely gestures and smile, and eventually, takes control of them.  She has attired in marvelous red saree, covered in white beautiful clothes on her chest, she has draped beautiful dark blue piece of cloth around her waist, who is not get attracted to her? Oh! Prabho, your Maya represents the three attributes of Rajasik, Thamasik, and Sathwik. The white marvelous clothes covered on the upper part of her body symbolize Sathwik, the marvelous red saree draped symbolizes Rajasik, and the beautiful blue clothes around the waist symbolize Thamasik nature.  Lord Bhrama was caught by the Rajasik nature engaged in the creation, the deities were caught by the Rajasik and Swathik enjoyed the pleasures of their respective abodes. Finally, the demons swollen with pride, ignorance, and arrogance of Thamasik nature fought against goodness. Lord Shankara was lured by the loveliness of Mohini, he forgot all the Yogic practices and started to chase her, it added flames of lust, desire, and anger in him, he forgot the moralities and shame, rushed after Mohini. The illustrious Sages, Shuka, Sanakadhis, and Rishis are overwhelmed by the powerful Maya of Lord Sri Hari and eventually rushed to the forest to conduct austerities and penance. Oh! Prabho, your unconquerable Maya is beyond description, none could get rid of her clutches, your Maya does not leave a single soul, even though someone is in deep sleep/free from worldly matters, she would take away his/her sleep, she induces various attributes, interest in infinite Shabdha/sound, Sparsha/touch, Rasa/passion, Roopa/appearance, and Gandha/smell, and completely steal his/her intellect. She would compel the Jeeva to engage in various sins, she influences the Jeeva to perform various religious and spiritual rites yearning for fruitful results. She would encourage the Jeeva to take pleasure in worldly matters, thereby pushing the souls into constant suffering and grief, eventually, the Jeeva would hurl into repeated births. Oh! Prabho, your Maya is indescribable, she would push the youth to indulge in various passions and multiplies their interest in worldly matters, she does not leave them for a minute, would follow them like the body and shadow. Oh! Prabho, your Maya has taken complete control over the creatures in Water, Air, and space. Oh! Shyamasundhara, Oh! Chathurshiromani/intelligent one, Oh! Nandhanandhan, how did I describe the state of the Jeeva drenched in the Maya? She does not worry about the clan or righteousness; she has taken the whole Universe and its living and non-living things under her control. The Jeeva gets shackled by your Maya with or without the knowledge about her. Oh! Prabho, I get anxious about the saying that Maya is inseparable from you, Oh! Sri Surdas Maharaj – Sri Sur – Vinaya – Pathrika – The unconquerable Maya/illusion of Mayapathi

Chapter – 52 -  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – The unconquerable Maya/illusion of Mayapathi

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Hari, who is not fallen prey to your Maya/illusion? Who has won over your Maya? Lord Rama crushed the pride of the King of the ocean and constructed a vast bridge across the ocean/Sethubandhan. Devarishi Narada was enticed by your Maya, eventually, he lost his austerities and wisdom, and rushed to marry princess Vishwamohini in the large assembly of the King. Lord Shankara was lured by the loveliness of Mohini, one of the incarnations of Lord Sri Hari while churning the ocean for nectar. Duryodhana had hundreds of brothers who possessed equivalent might to him, with no moral grounds, all of them were killed in the epic battle of Kurukshetra. Oh! Prabho, your Maya is unconquerable, she has created a garland of gold and glass pieces, she has equally won over the Santh, Mahathma, noble souls who undertake extreme austerities and vow, observe celibacy, purity, truthfulness, non-violence, charity, kindness, Swadhyaya/reading spiritual texts and Vedas, thereby achieved perfect control over senses, abandoned interest in worldly matters, contemplate and meditate upon supreme Lord Sri Hari, roam all over the Earth fearlessly in extreme bliss,  as well as the wicked and immoral people who are drenched in lust, desire, greed, ego, pride, and jealousy, and constantly chases after material pleasure such as possession, wealth, money, richness, fame, children, wife, companion, relatives, etc. in the same garland. Oh! Prabho, your Maya did not leave the illustrious, noble souls and the wicked as well.”

Sri Surdas Maharaj – Sri Sur – Vinaya – Pathrika - Illusion/Maya of Mayapathi/ of Supreme Lord Sri Hari

Chapter – 51 -  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika –Illusion/Maya of Mayapathi

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “ Oh! Prabho, kindly listen to the cries of distressed people like us, Oh! Prabho, your inseparable Maya/interest in worldly matters, infinite Shabda/sound, Sparsha/touch, Rasa/passion, Roopa/appearance, and Gandha/smell, has taken good control of us, and she is standing with a stick in her hand and making us dance to her tune, hence the Jeeva getting drenched into worldly matters of fleeting nature, eventually gets driven afar from the practice of devotion and singing in praise of Lord. Oh! Prabho, I have been wandering to various places due to my insatiable desire, and I have taken several costumes to appease my desire. Oh! Prabho, my intellect is completely illusioned and encouraged me to commit grave sins. Oh! Prabho, the unconquerable waves of my countless desires shoved me to become untruthful like the darkest hours of the night, eventually making me wide awake all night. Oh! Prabho, the desire for wealth, richness, money, fame, etc. equivalent to the dreams of fleeting nature drove me insane. Oh! Prabho, your Maha Mayamohini/illusion has taken complete control over my intellect of mine, and drove me on the path of immoral deeds, like the prostitutes encourage the chaste women to follow their footsteps, and led them to the bed of strangers. Oh! Prabho, your Maya drove me afar from you. Oh! Prabho, I am helpless, I have no one to protect other than you, where do I go? Whom did I approach? Oh! Prabho, kindly shower your compassionate grace upon me, without your grace I cannot get rid of the sufferings and pain of worldly existence/Thapathraya/three kinds of grief and repeated births.”

Sri Surdas Maharaj – Sri Sur – Vinaya – Pathrika -The life of unfortunate humans

Chapter – 50 -  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – The life of unfortunate humans

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Mortals, the rarest birth of humans achieved to practice devotion at the lotus feet of Lord Sri Hari if it was used for taking pleasure in worldly matters of infinite Shabda/sounds, Sparsha/touch, Rasa/passion, Roopa/forms, and Gandha/smell, that body of that unfortunate human is equivalent to fishes, pig, and dogs, in the sense, they are worth for nothing but eat, mate and defaecate. The unfortunate are the ones who take immense pleasure in worldly matters such as possession, wealth, richness, money, fame, children, wife, relatives, and companions, of fleeting nature, eventually, they drive afar from the supreme Lord of the Universe/Jagadheeshwara, who is the source of the functioning of the mind, intellect, Chithth, Ahamkara, Karma, and Gnanendriyas, Pancha Prana/vital energies, etc. without the knowledge of absolute truth/Paramarththa Thaththva, of the Supreme Lord who is all-pervasive, reside as a soul in the Jeeva, he is omniscient, omnipresent, and omnipotent. These ill-fated humans forget their purpose of birth and Lord Sri Krishnachandra and chase after lust, desire, ego, pride, jealousy, and anger. The unfortunates are the ones who do not strive for the four Purusharththa/Dharma/righteousness, Arththa/wealth, Kama/desire, and Moksha/renunciation, they do not practice meditation and contemplation on the supreme Lord who resides as soul, and they do not practice sing in praise of the glories of the Sacchidhanandha Swaroopa Paramathma Paramambhramam./ Sath-eternal, Chithth-pure, Ananandha/bliss”

Sri Surdas Maharaj – Sri Sur – Vinaya – Pathrika – The life of unfortunate Jeeva/humans

Chapter – 49 -  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – The life of unfortunate Jeeva/humans

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Mortals, if the Jeeva does not practice at the lotus feet of LordSri Hari, after achieving the rarest birth as a human, the soul would become Pretha/spirit/ghost of impure mind drenched in lust, desire, anger, ego, jealousy, and pride, and wander all over the Earth seeking meals to wave off hunger. They do not speak auspicious words, they always humiliate others by words, mind, and deed. These people won’t take pleasure in the association of noble souls, Santh, Mahathma, or do not perform any noble deeds, instead, they engage in various grave sins. These wicked-natured people amass wealth through unscrupulous means and hide it somewhere, finally, this wealth would go either waste or remain unusable. The purpose of earning wealth in moral ways is to utilize it for the Dharmic deed/righteous deeds, performing charity to Santh Mahatma noble souls, serving preceptors, Bhramins, and Lord Sri Hari and his devotees, construction of well, pond, garden, shelter homes, etc., if the wealth earned in honorable means was utilized for Dharmic deeds, itwould bring an abundance of pieties to the Jeeva and his entire clan. If the wealth is amassed in immoral ways,  that were not utilized for Dharmic purposes, would bring bad luck to the person, and his entire clan would doom to destruction. These wicked people do not take interest in singing in praise of the glories of the Supreme Lord or listening to the glorious legend of Lord Sri Hari, they constantly engage in various sins, and hurt people surrounded by them. Finally, these people and their families meet a terrible end, and hurl themselves to hellish torture.”

Chapter – 48 -  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – The rarest birth as human achieved after the pieties earned in several previous births

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Mortals, the rarest birth as a human has achieved after several births of pieties, to practice devotion at the lotus feet of Lord Sri Hari, the unfortunate gets attached to the destructible Prakrithi/ possession, wealth, money, fame, richness, children, wife, companion, relatives, etc. and drenched in lust, desire, anger, ego, jealousy, pride, etc. eventually hurl into different Yonis/wombs and undergo sufferings and grief of worldly existence, in this way constantly fall in the clutches of death. The Jeeva soaked in the increased interest in worldly matters engages in various sins, eventually throw themselves into the womb of dirty creatures like pelicans, vultures, etc., and waste their lives, there is no difference between these dirty creatures and the humans who are soaked in worldly matters, these creatures also have their own family, children, house, etc. The people who consume meat take pleasure in killing lives, hence they are no different from these dirty creatures like pelicans and vultures, etc. Oh! Mortals, the Jeeva who do not practice the worship of Lord Sri Hari, contemplate and meditate upon the Lord, or follow austerities, disciplines, celibacy, self-control, non-violence, truthfulness, charity, kindness, etc. are two-legged animals like owl, buffalo, they cannot be considered as humans.”

Sri Surdas Maharaj – Sri Sur – Vinaya – Pathrika – The absolute Truth/Paramarththa Thaththva

Chapter – 47 -  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – The absolute Truth/Paramarththa Thaththva

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “I feel perplexed watching the mortals who abandon the practice of devotion of Lord Sri Hari, Oh! Ignorant, you are leaving the Shyamasundhar Namaroopi fruit and chasing after the worldly matters of possession, richness, fame, money, wealth, children, wife, relatives, companion, etc. like the toxic fruit of destructible nature, is nothing other than the Maya of the Lord.  These are ignorant people who do not know the amazing effects of Malayagiri Chandan/sandalwood of Mount Malaya; hence they rush for ordinary ashes to apply to their bodies. These dull-minded wicked people abandon the sacred lake Manasarovar which is the dwelling place of swans’ which are the symbol of purity, wisdom, intellect, and take bath in the contaminated pool where the crows take pleasure. These ignorant remains unnoticed to put off their own burning houses like the Thapathraya/three kinds of grief of worldly existence/Adhidheivik, Adhyathmik, and Adhibhauthik, and run to put off the fire in the burning garbage.  These unfortunate people do not know that the rarest birth as a human has achieved for the practice of devotion at the lotus feet of Lord Sri Hari, and thereby get rid of grief of worldly existence and repeated births, hence every second of their lives get wasted engaged in various sins. Oh! Mortals, it is impossible to achieve the fruitfulness of life and serenity of mind without leaving interest in worldly matters of perishable nature, and interest in infinite Nama/names, Roopa/forms, Dhrishya/appearances, Shabdha/sounds, Sparsha/touch, Rasa/passion, Gandha/smell, etc. otherwise, the Jeeva has to continue to take several births in different forms of 64 lakhs and continue to suffer the grief of worldly existence, in this way, the ignorant take several births in different wombs and remain a joker before the death. Oh! Mortals, the Universe, and its living and non-living things are mere illusions/Mrigathrishna, is an illusion-caused water source in the middle of the desert. The Universe and its living and non-living things are impermanent, it has short-living nature, chasing after the material world of fleeting nature is foolishness, hence leave your interest in worldly matters of possession, richness, fame, wealth, money, children, wife, relatives and companion, and practice sing in praise of Lord Sri Hari in the association of Santh/saints, Mahathma and noble souls, thereby achieve the fruitfulness of life and serenity of mind.”

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Prabho, Oh! Sri Hari, kindly bless me with firm devotion at your lotus feet, whenever I take births in different Yonis and in the different Yugas. Oh! Prabho, kindly shower your compassionate grace upon me to get an opportunity to listen to your endless glories, like the Hiran/deer love to listen to the melodious music. Oh! Prabho, kindly provide me the firm devotion at your lotus feet, like the Chakthaka bird constantly cries for freshwater droplets from the Swathi star, that hesitate to drink water even from the sacred Manasarovar. Oh! Prabho, kindly blesses me that my eyes should yearn to envision your marvelous appearance, like the Chathaka bird that gets highly enthusiastic after witnessing the full moon. Oh! Prabho, kindly blesses that my hands should get the opportunity to worship your idol. Oh! Sri Surdas Maharaj – Sri Sur – Vinaya – Pathrika – Bhrammajjyani/knower of supreme Bhramam

Chapter – 45 -  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – Bhrammajjyani/knower of supreme Bhramam

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Prabho, the fortunate are the Athmajjyanis/Bhramajjyani, knowers of Bhramam, who undertake severe austerities and disciplines such as vows, celibacy, Shama, Dhama/self-control, Sathyam/truthfulness, Sahucham/hygiene, Dhaya/kindness, Astheyam/abstain from stealing, Arjjavam, Ahimsa/non-violence, Dhanam/charity, Swadhyaya/reading scriptures, and sacred texts, etc. get rid of impurities of the mind, abandons the interest in worldly matters of fleeting nature, and worship Lord Shyamsundhar with the mind, words, and deeds and engages in the contemplation and meditation of Sachidhanandha Swaroopa Paramathma Parambhramam Lord Sri Hari day and night, sing in praise of the glories of the Lord, renounce the worldly matters and remain in supreme bliss. These Athmajjyanis spread love, kindness, and compassion, they consider the most precious things as the broken mirror pieces, they are freed from the dualities of respect and disrespect, evil and good, heat and cold, happiness and sorrow, gain and loss, ultimately, they blissfully roam around the world without fear. These Athmajjyanis would not return to the ocean of worldly existence/Samsara Sagara which is nothing other than suffering and grief, they need not take several births in different wombs/humans, birds, and animals. Etc. or undergo sufferings and grief of worldly existence.”

Sri Surdas Maharaj – Sri Sur – Vinaya – Pathrika – The practice of devotion removes impurities from the mind

Chapter – 44 -  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – The practice of devotion removes impurities from the mind

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Prabho, whoever practiced intense love and devotion at the lotus feet of the sweet little child of Nandhababa/son of Nandhababa/Lord Krishna won’t chase after the worship of demigods, like the fish thrown in the milk won’t enjoy its stay as it is in the water, plainly it can’t find happiness elsewhere other than water. Oh! Prabho, Oh! Shyamasundhara, whoever tasted the nectar-like devotion at your lotus feet would get rid of impurities of mind such as Kama/lust, Krodha/anger, Moha/desire, Lobha/arrogance, Madha/ego, Mathshcharya/jealousy, Ahamkara, and Mamakara, get rid of attachment in worldly matters, such as possession, money, richness, fame, children, wealth, wife, companion, relatives, etc. and fearlessly roam around the world in extreme bliss which is beyond description, like the speechless person enjoyed the most delicious meal, but not in a position to describe its taste. Oh! Mortals, it is difficult to explain the bliss achieved from the practice of devotion at the lotus feet of Lord Sri Hari, like the rivers and streams rushing towards the ocean won’t return. Oh! Mortals, the pure love and devotion at the lotus feet of Lord Sri Krishnachandra who has beautiful eyes that resemble lotus flower petals, steals the intellect and wisdom of the devotee, thereby the Jeeva abandons the interest in impermanent worldly matters of possession, wealth, richness, fame, money, children, wife, companion, relatives, etc. eventually get freed from the three kinds of sufferings and grief of worldly existence.”

Chapter – 43 -  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – The practice of devotion to get rid of sufferings and grief of worldly existence

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Prabho, Oh! Govinda, the Jeeva already surrendered at your lotus feet wouldn’t find interest in the worldly matters of fleeting nature. Oh! Shyamasundhara, you are the source of ultimate bliss, hence whatever material possession is achieved without the devotion at your lotus feet won’t give happiness or peace. The woman who sincerely follows chastity would be honored in society, the woman who keeps an illegitimate relationship with a stranger won’t be respected in society, and the child born to a prostitute would be considered illegitimate. Oh! Prabho, the people who are afar from the worship of you, and engaged in the worship of demigods to fulfill their desires would face constant troubles, they are like the dull-minded people living on the shore of sacred river Ganga/Pathithapavani/Mahanadhi, the liberator of the souls abandons the sacred water and searching out for the well water to quench their thirst. It would be like the dog running after the mud pot seller, alas! he would have nothing to offer other than the empty pot. Jeeva who finds an opportunity to gain in every action, and live with the expectations are ignorant, like watering the branches of the tree instead of the root, planting a tree with the expectation that it would give succulent fruits. Oh! Mortals, whoever worships and sings in praise of Nandhanandhan Sri Krishnachandra without any personal motive would remain blissful always. Oh! Ignorant, practice the worship of Lord Sri Hari, and get rid of the sufferings and grief of worldly existence.”

Chapter – 42 -  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – The rarest birth as a human should be devoted to the worship of Lord Sri Hari

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “ Oh! Prabho, you are the source of all kinds of auspiciousness, pure devotion at your lotus feet would remove Thapathraya/three kinds of grief of Jeeva/living and non-living things. Oh! Prabho, whoever devoted at your lotus feet, contemplate and meditate upon your marvelous form attired in majestic silk cloth, adorned in various ornaments on the chest, armlets, waist ornament, anklets, etc. would remain free from the interest in worldly matters such as possession, richness, wealth, money, fame, children, wife, companion, relatives, etc. which has fleeting nature, they would remain free from the sufferings and grief of worldly existence and live in utmost bliss. Oh! Mortals, even after achieving the rarest birth as a human, it was not utilized for the practice of devotion at the lotus feet of Lord Sri Hari, worship of the Lord, and the practice of austerities, vow, celibacy, self-control, non-violence, Shama, Dhama, Sathyam/truthfulness, Dhaya/kindness, Dhanam/Charity, Astheyam, Arjjavam, etc. it is unfortunate, they would be considered a burden on the Earth. Oh! Prabho, you have taken several incarnations for the welfare of the Jeeva and noble souls to remove the evilness in the Kali era. Oh! Prabho, whoever afar from the practice of devotion and worship of your lotus feet are nothing but Sookar/pig, Swan/dogs, and ugly creatures.”

Sri Surdas Maharaj – Sri Sur – Vinaya – Pathrika – Bhagavath Prapthi/The attainment of perpetual bliss

Chapter – 41 -  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – Bhagavath Prapthi/The attainment of perpetual bliss

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Prabho, your splendor is beyond description, the illustrious Rishis, Sages, and Kings have sung in praise of your glories in abundance, hence the people and their Kingdoms flourished with richness and devotion. Their intense devotion at the lotus feet of Lord Sri Hari chased away the thieves like the impurities of mind such as Kama/lust, Krodha/Anger, Moha/desire, Lobha/ego, Bhaya/fear, Ahamkara/pride, jealousy, etc. and they have enriched with wisdom, knowledge. The Kings ruled their Kingdom wisely, and the people lived in utmost bliss, they remain protected with the grace of the Lord. The illustrious Rishis, Sages, and the Kings devoted to the lotus feet of Lord Sri Hari remained in a state of ecstasy after consuming the nectar-like bliss, and they had pure wisdom/Paramarththa Thaththva/absolute truth, as their minister. The Arththa /wealth and Kama/desire stood as the doorkeeper of the King waiting for his call, and the Dharma/righteous and Moksha/renunciation stood their heads bowed before the King.  The Chithth/mind and intellect are the two gatekeepers that stood wide-awake always, hence these four Purusharththa did not make an attempt to get closer to them. The eight kinds of supernatural powers/Ashtasidhdhis stood with folded hands on the gate of these illustrious Rishis, Sages, and Kings, but the Vairagya/abandonment like the armed guard shut the doors towards those Ashtasidhdhis. Oh! Mortal, whoever devoted at the lotus feet of Lord Sri Hari would not get shackled by Maya/illusion or Time, hence practice devotion and pure love at the lotus feet of Lord Sri Hari which is the ultimate source of Bhagavathprapthi/attainment of eternal bliss.”

Sri Surdas Maharaj – Sri Sur – Vinaya – Pathrika – Devotion to get rid of Thapathraya/three kinds of grief

Chapter – 40 -  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – Devotion to get rid of Thapathraya/three kinds of grief

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Prabho, Oh! Rama, your sincere devotees never face ill fate, they will have all the comforts in abundance, Oh! Prabho, you are the source of welfare and happiness for your devotees, and you fulfill all the desires of your worshiper. Oh! Prabho, your kindness, and compassion are beyond description, you are the source of ‘Purusharththa’/ four kinds of auspiciousness known as Dharma/righteousness, ARththa/wealth, Kama/desire, and Moksha/renunciation. Oh! Prabho, your glories are countless, excel the splendor of Devaraj Indra, you symbolize Indra, you are the creator, preserver, and destroyer of the Universe and its living and non-living things, after all these the arrogant and ignorant humans swollen with pride and ego gets drenched in the interest of worldly matters, such as possession, wealth, money, richness, fame, relatives, companion, children, wife, etc. commits grave sins and hurl themselves into repeated births. The ignorant humans swollen with Ahamkara/ego and Mamakara/Pride, declare their rights on each and every material thing in the world, without the knowledge of its destructible nature, or unwilling to share it, or utilize it, just like the serpent that holds precious gem on its forehead, that becomes the reason for its death. Oh! Mortals, if you want to get rid of three kinds of grief such as 1) Adhidheivik, the grief, and sufferings caused by the natural calamities, flood, wood fire, famine, drought, epidemic, etc. 2) Adhibhauthik, the grief, and sufferings caused by the interest in worldly matters such as possession, wealth, money, richness, fame, wife, children, relatives, and companion, etc. that have fleeting nature 3) Adhyathmik, the grief and sufferings caused by aging, illnesses, fear of death, and the pain of separation from the beloved ones, Oh!
